Bins - a dilemma
I emailed Veolia to complain that my neighbours were leaving a bin out on the street because they had too many in their front garden; Veolia replied saying they would come and remove two of them. Trouble is - I've said nothing to my neighbours, and I don't get on very well with them (long history). I have tried putting their bin inside the gate, but it was promptly put back outside.
I meant my letter as a general complaint about the bin chaos, but they have interpreted it as me acting on my neighbour's behalf...I've had to write and ask them not to collect the bins. Frankly my neighbours are unlikely to phone the council for themselves even if I suggest it (or especially if I suggest it!).
I feel like I've made a bad situation worse, though it does show they are willing to remove the excess bins if requested.

Interesting that you have brought this up...we too now have four massive bins squashed into a tiny area. Our house is divided into two flats, so I don't feel at liberty to request that one of the bins is removed, but there really isn't enough space for all four of them...

In my street, we face bin rage because we all have too many bins! My house now has 6 bins for 3 flats, instead of 2 bins plus recycle boxes we kept in our flats until collection day.
We need the 3 rubbish bins because the rubbish is collected only once in 2 weeks - and one of the flat owners has 2 young children and lots of rubbish. We do not need the 3 recycle bins. Indeed since the use of the handy boxes has ceased, we seem to recycle less, not more. So we have 2 recycle bins we don't need at all - and an extra black bin which would not be needed if we could go back to the weekly collection.
And of course, the street looks really scenic with all these bins!
Will follow your example and ask for some of the bins to be removed...!

I told them at consultation that my front "garden" did not have space for two bins of whatever size. It is the area I see when I sit in my lounge = 2 feet away from my sofa, out the bay window, behind the privet. So I called yesterday to get my recyling bags promised by Veolia man during consult. Got a call today from Veolia man telling me that there is space for a second small bin. I told him hell would freeze over before I accept a second bin since my front is not a refuse bin depot.
My neighbourhood, one of the most deprived in the UK =N17, selon statistics. It used to look dishevelled but was improving. It now looks like Veolia-Haringey's wheely bin depot. This is not the way to encourage recycling. Especialy since I see green and grey bins filled with the same stuff i.e no recycling going on just bin fillling.
The way a place looks also influences quality of life and is part of the sustainability message. And there are other solutions to this dilema. But does any one really care about how inept Haringey Council is?

Is it Veolio you should have these discussions with? It seems to be Haringey who has pushed for this in an effort to save money. I couldnt agree more, walking up the ladder roads with the many flat conversions has created a city of bins adding to the rubbish, shopping trollies, etc dumped in many front gardens. Interestingly this system was introduced in Denmark at least 10 years ago and was quickly abandoned. Rubbish is now sorted at the refuse centres and this is in a country where people take pride in their environment. You pay deposits for wine bottles, plastic bottles etc. So by paying deposits, even if you can't be bothered to take it back to the shop someone else will. I bought my first tape recorder after having collected bottles! I guess Haringey and other boroughs will eventually wake up and listen to other countries which are way ahead and it could reduce the amount of litter as an additional benefit. Can't wait for the noise of Veolia emptying the large green bins with the sound of smashing bottles.

Exactly....this is NOT ABOUT RECYLING but about reducing the cost of collecting waste due to cost reductions. I do appreciate that the Council has to find cost savings for whatever reason but the bin situation is cancelling out other efforts to improve our neighbourhoods. And people who don't want to recycle don't do it any how.
Other solutions are possible. Why is it so hard for oour Coucil to think out of the box? Why it is so difficult to create the right conditions to improve our areas?
Haringey a failed Borough? Baby P. Planning disarray! What next?
Do not get me wrong...I like my street area and many of my neighbours.

Why can't we organise a 'big dump'!. If we took all of our unwanted bins and placed them at a pre- decided point that would affect, annoy, upset the council they would have to do something. I reckon we all chip in to hire a couple of transits, pick up the damn things and stick them
In front of a suitable council building, a d then drive off. Or, we light some torches, march on the council HQ, burn it to the ground, stop paying our council tax, declare ourselves a big society republic, and commence a better fairer cOmmunity! Damn those idiots at town hall!

So today was the first day of the collections using the new recycling bins, at least this is what the flyer said. Normal refuse got collected but no sight of the collection of recycling. So has the new system failed at the first hurtle? Lausanne Road is overflowing with bins of all sizes and shapes on pavements and front paths/gardens. Raleigh Road looks even worse. What is going on? Does anyone know? My recycling bin is now full, but if I put recyling in the normal bin then that will be full before the next collection date in 2 weeks. Aargh!

Thanks. Maybe it is taking a lot longer with the switch over. Will make enquiries as our road has not been done.

I have a friend from Paris visiting and took her around Chelsea today. She said taht she noticed that our neighbourhood had so many bins piled up all a round it and taht in Chelsea despit having front gardens too they didn't haven't any!
Bins make our neighbourhoods look like trash. It certainly doesn't help to "regenerate" the area!
