Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

On such a lovely day where better to spend your Sunday morning than with your neighbours in Fairland Park doing a quick litter pick, a bit of pruning and clearing flower beds and throwing some planting ideas around:

Join us in the park the first Sunday of every month 10-12 pm for some gardening and tidying action. There may be buns and coffee. Bring tools if you have them but don't worry if you don't.

Excellent turn out on such a fine day.

Now that Fairland Park is 2 years old (since its redevelopment ) it does need a little care and attention from local users. As Liz says above please don't hesitate in joining us on the first Sunday of the month, all seasons except winter. Look out for reminders under the 'events' section on Harringay Online.

Thanks Matt and Liz, and thanks everyone who showed up  - we got loads done .

Liz. Good to see a bit of direct action as it were. I will pitch in when I am up there with the kids. I have to say I often fill a bag of rubbish when I am there and toss it into the bin as I mooch around with the nippers. There never seems to be a deficit of the stuff.

On a slightly different topic, I was up in Finsbury Park on Tuesday and the place was an absolute tip. I wanted to mention it earlier, but what was/ is the score? I know the sun came out but the bins were overflowing and there was rubbish absolutely everywhere. 50% of the issue was un-emptied bins. Have the park staff/ council given up? My wife told me it was no better on Weds...

Yep, I walked through finsbury park on Friday after work, was awful. Whilst there was a lot of rubbish just generally strewn and left, there was loads piled up next to bins, people do want to dispose of things properly.
Doesn't bode well for the summer ahead... Bet they make more of an effort for our Jamaican Olympic party though...

Hate to post this... but... When I was in Fairland this morning about 10am it looked luverly! The tidy up yesterday made a big difference.

When I was in Fairland at 5.30pm today there was loads of rubbish by the tennis court. Specifically, by the two benches just outside the court, facing the park. Obviously it is the youths playing football who leave this sh*t. Most of the people there I've seen many, many times before. Unfortunately I don't feel able to tackle 11 adolescent boys on my own.

It's v common. Many a Sunday morning at tennis, I grab a couple of the floating past plastic bags and pick up the rubbish around the court. It is hard to tackle a group (or indeed anyone) over their littering habits. Those 2 benches are a popular sport for teens to hang out. Maybe a damn great bin needs to be sited between the benches so they don't have to tire themselves out walking to the bin by the exit, it was one of the things we discussed on Sunday.

I think its highly likely that after a 2 week holiday and nice weather, Fairland will need some extra work especially in the litter picking dept from the locals. I intend to take a black bag and some gloves if I go over with the kids. Just 5 mins picking up the big items can make a big difference.

In the long term, how we prevent such behaviour is worth discussing. It would be nice to know why young people litter in this manner, rebellion? sheer idleness? thoughtlessness? learned behaviour? and what they themselves think could be done to encourage them to stop. Any ideas how we could find out?

Yes i saw this as well. Not just their litter but they had decided to get a few sticks together and some of their plastic cups to make a little fire (wasn't going at the time). Maybe if the bin was there by the court they'd light that! Bored teenagers. Not sure what can be done about that. So far at least the council does seem to be visiting the park fairly regularly to litter pick.

The main thing about Sunday's volunteer work was tidying up the gardens, which was great. Litter is always an issue ... everywhere.

Was over in Finsbury Park today and clearly a big tidy up had happened, as the bins were empty and the litter minimal. Around the benches is the worst. Last year, there was a suggestion that big bins needed to be installed temporarily in Summer to recognise the rise in alfresco dining and more people in the park. Someone, maybe Hugh, posted a picture of one in one of the Royal Parks.

There will be no Jamaica Village after all. Failure to get financing for it apparently.
