Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

well there are lots of smallish potholes going down green lanes hill from Manor House to under the bridge. But last night my bike landed in a massive crater near Finsbury tavern. I’m not quite sure how I managed to stay upright, but someone thankfully, as my old brittle bones are a bit fragile these days. But more to the point, it’s badly buckled my wheel.  Really p....d off as it’s costing at least £55 to replace, not to mention the inconvenience

Be careful, as I think it’s new

Thanks for the warning, and glad you're all right. Was it northbound or southbound?

Thanks for the heads up.

Sorry that it's set you back a few quid, especially at this time of year - and I'm glad you're okay!

Did you report it via the council's portal? I can't speak for Haringey, but when I was at Enfield the roads team prided themselves on dealing with such reports pretty swiftly.

Thanks for your replies. It’s going northbound down the hill, bit further into the middle of the lane, so if like me, you could be hurtling down quite fast. Thought I was safer from the potholes, away from the sides. Mistake

im not sure where to report it, but will take a look, thanks

Best to report it here - https://hackney.gov.uk/street-defects

since Manor House to the New River bridge is Hackney, north of that is Haringey.

A bit of orientation here - https://www.cyclinguk.org/article/what-should-i-do-if-i-hit-pothole though the main focus is on injury which thankfully you avoided.

Thanks, Tigha for posting this and warning people. Thanks too, Gordon T for the Hackney reporting link and the link to the Cycling Uk website and its practical advice. It strikes me that Haringey should consider reposting this - with permission - on the Council's website. Especially as the combination of heavy rains and likely below freezing temperatures may lead to many more potholes.

In the past I suggested that cyclists are obvious people to turn to for crowd-sourced information on potholes and similar.  Photos, GPS data and mobile phones should make it far easier to get accurate updated information to carry out prompt repairs.

Maybe other boroughs or towns have such schemes?

As I suspected, Haringey already does.

The pothole reporting system consists of a satellite map where you can drop a pin, upload a photo and describe the problem.

At Enfield, one "wishlist" feature was to use location data to populate on the mobile app, this may have been done by now. Most councils use the same engine to power these reporting tools, so it might be the same.

That stretch has always been terrible. I don't know whether it suffers because of the trees or it's neglected because it's on the boundary or what.

This is a good site (or you can get the apps) for reporting potholes. It passes it on to whoever the relevant authority is

Thanks Dave W.  There is indeed a Haringey general street faults online facility; including to photograph and report  potholes.  So my apologies for not being clear on what I had in mind by a scheme which "turns to" cyclists "for crowd-sourced information on potholes and similar".

I know many cyclists report potholes, vehicles and rubbish blocking cycle lanes and other issues. And as individuals they move around with sensitive and accurate pothole detection equipment.

But I have in mind projects which might improve on effective but random individual reporting and give a more comprehensive overview.  Say a focus on every street in one part of Haringey.  Or perhaps within a particular time-frame? Maybe a report-potholes- day for the entire borough?

That’s brilliant, I will def report it, just need to check exact position tomorrow. Arms sore now from the jolt, but thankfully nil else. Thank goodness it didn’t bust my frame. Saw another one on st Annes road this morning. Not sure if it’s new or whether I cycle there in day light so used to weaving round it, but will also report it

add on, I have just checked that hazard map and there are a grand total of 26 hazard warnings for that very short stretch from Manor House down to the new river, so seems like a few others have also suffered. The more complaints, the quicker it will be fixed as lethal in the dark

I did not see the pothole this evening but another large one has formed immediately before the New River, northbound. It was full of rainwater so difficult to see. I’ve reported it.

Perhaps you should let the PM know as well.

What's he waiting for, Christmas is around the corner & he is the "People's servant", after all.

I reported this pot hole to the council warning of danger of serious accident to cyclists.

I reported it before your accident and they have still not fixed it. Please press for damages as this will make sure they act more urgently on these pot holes. I have included a Guardian and bike solicitor link here
