Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi all

The poor shopkeeper on Ferry Lane Estate was robbed at gun-point. His day's takings were stolen and a necklace and pendent of a cultural/spiritual nature was ripped from his neck, valued at over £1200.

We've recently seen an increase in crime on the estate and this latest episode has shaken up local residents - not to mention that it's frightened the shopkeeper and is thinking of closing down.

I want to help him all I can - he's a lovely man and is a key member of the community. I wonder if anyone knows if there's funding available from Haringey, to help shopkeepers make their premises safer, safeguarding against criminal attacks.

Incidentally, a few days after this gun-point incident, the same shopkeeper's window was kicked and badly cracked. He is now faced with a £500 bill to replace it.

I'd appreciate knowing if Haringey Counvil are helping shopkeepers, (in light of last year's riot).

Many thanks and all the best
Jeanette

Hi Jeanette

Contact your the Tottenham Hale Safer Neighbourhoods team. They should be able to point you in the right direction for security advice. There should be a local Crime Prevention Officer available who may have knowledge of funding streams, if they exist. May also be worth contacting one of your councillors.

Jeanette, I'm sure you've already spoken to my ward colleague Cllr Lorna Reith who'll be onto this. You might also want to have a word with Cllr Bernice Vanier the cabinet councillor with the remit for community safety. bernice.vanier@haringey.gov.uk
