Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Appalling traffic leaving Sainsbury's and Arena retail park - anyone know what's happening with it?
It took me an hour and 15 minutes to leave Sainsbury's car park today and I had a torrent of abuse from a revolting irate man and witnessed one car screeching up the wrong side of the road, over taking all the waiting traffic, screaming abuse at the hapless parking attendants trying to direct/calm the remaining traffic. I've seen several threads on this but they all seem to be from last year. I've reported the problem to the council (as I hope have many others) but the problem seems to have just got worse and worse. It seems particularly bad this week for some reason.
Does anyone know what is being done or planned to try and sort this out? I'm surprised that there hasn't been a serious assault or incident due to the ridiculously badly thought out traffic lights and planning of the extension of the store.

Thanks for bringing this up Louise. It's appalling that it's been left to fester. I can start things off with a couple of suggestions:
1. Write to your democratically elected representatives. Fixing this should be an election issue next May.
2. Write to Sainsbury's. I had a good response recently from the CEO's office. You can reach CEO, Justin King by email.

Thanks Hugh for those suggestions, I'll contact both. I wish I could vote with my feet but it is the most convenient store for me and I don't want to have to drive to Tottenham or Colney Hatch.
I expect both half-term and the fact that Tottenham Lane has put traffic lights up on the roundabout because of road works (another hellish driving experience) has added to the weight of traffic this week.

Also the little road before Manor House (Woodberry something?) is closed by roadworks, which prevents people turning left there - this has added to the mess. It also takes absolutely ages to get to Manor House on the bus now, not to mention that the bus stop outside the tube is closed....

At the risk of pointing out the blindingly obvious how does spending 75 mins queueing to leave a car park constitute a "convenient" shopping trip....?!!!! You should vote with your feet - literally - ditch your car altogether and use your local shops instead. Alternatively do as I do, and go out shopping once the kids are tucked up in bed. There's no problems getting in or out of the car park at 10pm; and I can do the whole family shop in half the time it takes at 5pm, and there's always a till free. Trust me, it's a dream.

Yep, I'm with Antoinette on this one. We try to restrict trips to Stainsbury's to a once a month trip at 6am on a Saturday morning to get all those essential non-perishables you can't get in Crouch End or on the Lane... if we didn't need large quantities of cat food I'd probably give them a miss altogether

Solution:
1. Use local shops on Green Lanes
2. Get shopping delivered, there's more choice than just Sainos.
3. Buy a drag behind trolly for medium sized trips and walk there
4. Go on your push bike with back pack and smile smugly as you cycle past all the cars.
5. Drive on a Friday evening, everyones out or watching reality TV

Thank you all for your suggestions. Yes, the best solution would be to shop on the Lanes where I can get most of the stuff I need on a daily basis. I had kind of worked this one out for myself - my question was more whether anyone knew whether a solution to the actual problem had been escalated from last year and it seems not.
Shopping when the kid is tucked up in bed would get me into trouble with social services but I take your point Antoinette!!

If I have to go there at busy times, I park in Lothair Road and cross (carefully ) at the Beaconsfield.

Its a mess for all the reasons pointed out above but will get worse as the dreaded 'festive' period approaches. There has already been a death, on Oct 9th, a fatal collision and I think soon there will be a murder cus of lost tempers. I hate just trying to cross by there to walk to the tube. Even we meek pedestrians get shouted at just for wanting to cross the road when the light is in our favour!
I dont take bus to the tube now, it takes too long. I also think it's not just Sainsburys- there is a mini retail park with its own car park, Sainso's, a petrol station and a McDonalds all using one feed road into the already very busy Green lanes. Good planning to all that lot together dont you think? The jam has been worsened by cars coming in and out of the shopping arena. Possible solution- knock down Mcdonalds so there is one less burden there, turn that into a small bus terminus for the W5 plus a new local bus that might do nicely along Wightman road. it can be an interchange with Green Lanes overground and also be a place for the rail replacement bus when that line is not working. There are plenty of other places to eat along here, we dont need that mcdonalds but we do need more public transport and a good flowing traffic system.
