Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I think I've got the dreaded lurgy. Hot, sore throat, swollen glands yadda yadda. Gutted as have had to cancel various get-togethers that I've been looking forward to for ages, particuarly as part of me thinks I've probably just got a cold.

Nobody is getting tested anymore (well not in London anyway). I did call NHS Direct; they called me back at 4.45. In the morning!! No complaints, they've got a lot on their plate, but didn't really improve my general state of well-being.

Anyone else out there in the same boat?

Liz you hit the nail on the head well done ;)
Why thank you, James. So glad that we have managed to draw this conversation to a close to your satisfaction.
A hint of sarcasm Liz ? Don't be like me it dosen't suit you.
The real danger is that if you (or your child) develops something more dangerous that starts off with bad flu-type symptoms (e.g. meningitis), then you may well miss getting diagnosed by a doctor.
News at midnight on Radio 4 was rather alarming;

1. deaths from swine flu has leapt up to 29
2. cases have jumped by 50,000 this week
3. London is at epidemic level
4. predicting 3000 - 65,000 deaths !!!

Government's response is too start up a self diagnosis web site. This is all starting to actually get quite worrying.
29 deaths is minute. And most of them were result of underlying causes
3000 - 65,000 is a pretty vague prediction

" During the 1999 to 2000 winter, seasonal flu deaths reached 21,000 and even during average winters there are normally anywhere between 6,000 to 8,000 deaths. "

It's Friday: stop worrying and go out and get smashed :-)
I must admit I go through spells or worrying and not giving a hoot. I think the numbers are very misleading and as Jon has said the deaths are minimal when you look at deaths from other flus and illnesses. I have made no effort to alter my day to day activities other that washing my hands more.

Good plan .... unless I see a whole lot o pigs sitting at the bar quenching their thirst ... probably Guinness.

Now Matt, were I a particularly thin-skinned member of my race, I might want to ask: 'Why probably Guinness?????!!!!!'
AS A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WORKING IN THE THICK OF IT-I CAN HONESTLY SAY YOU REALLY DONT NEED TO WORRY
did i say that loud enough-best advice we are giving,is go get a therometer for the winter-if your temp is over 38.c and you feel like shit, you may want to call the doctor or get tamiflu=-otherwise just get stocked wth paracetamol -and turn the tv,radio etc off when you here the word swine flu unless its some doctor giving advice-
thousands die every year from flu, probably more people have been killed crossing the road in the time it has taken a total of 28bodies to die from pig flu

Right off my soap box and off to save some lives

By the way, dont quote me on that-dont want a liable case
ha ha
Oh yes and drink lots of guiness,it makes the Old Ale happy, and full of vitamins to protect for the winter-at least sounds like a good excuse
