Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I think I've got the dreaded lurgy. Hot, sore throat, swollen glands yadda yadda. Gutted as have had to cancel various get-togethers that I've been looking forward to for ages, particuarly as part of me thinks I've probably just got a cold.

Nobody is getting tested anymore (well not in London anyway). I did call NHS Direct; they called me back at 4.45. In the morning!! No complaints, they've got a lot on their plate, but didn't really improve my general state of well-being.

Anyone else out there in the same boat?

Yep... Had it since Tuesday. Fresh Ginger tea with lemon and honey takes the edge off the cold symptoms, apart from that... Rest. Had one day of temperature, now just generally rotten so quarantining myself.

I haven't bothered with tamiflu since that hasn't made a difference for friends who did take it.

Hopefully catching this fairly mild strain should make us immune to the heavier wave expected for the autumn/winter... Lets see if that works out!

Hope you feel better soon!
Didn't feel great yesterday, my wife has more or less your same symptoms and my babyson had problems a couple of days ago.
If this is the swine flu is nothing worst than a normal cold in my opinion.
Came down with it Tuesday. Have been in denial all week, insisting I've got a cold but coming to the sad conclusion (due to onset of nausea) that it is indeed the oink. It's not worse than a bad cold but just goes on and on...getting v bored now

However, as the anke says, its mainly rest and tea that seems to help.
we are in mass panic mode as we have two little children. how badly did it affect your baby, finsburypark?
Hi - our 5 month old had it last month, is just really getting over it all.

Had very high temperature in the early stages - up to 39 degrees.. but that came down with calpol and fresh air etc..

She was prescribed the tamiflu which came as a solution to pippet into her mouth, that lasted as a five day course. To be honest, I don't really think it was worth it as it has side-effects of vomitting and diaoreah so on top of the flu she wasn't taking in much food - lost a little weight and was quite weak and lethargic poor thing..

better now though

all in all - not overly serious in her, didn't feel the need to do anything like go to doctors or hosp or anything...

hope that helps..

Cheers
Paul
Hi Paul
That's a great help - you read so much mad stuff about this lurgy.
Will loosen the little one's face mask slightly now.
Had it last week, when I'd just got back to London from being at uni. It's definitely going around here! I was a bit surprised to get so ill because I never suffer from seasonal flu, but I didn't take tamiflu -- just lots of paracetamol. Stayed in bed for a couple of days and after that it was just like having a normal cold.

Get well soon!

Hi Alison,

Hope you get better soon. If it's any comfort a lot of people seem to have it, or have had it. Probably 20-30% of the population so far. Symptoms vary and those affected seem to recover in 2-4 days.
Yes i have swine flu and i have just a few days left to live.
Not really, why are we joining in on this media manufactured hysteria ?
Stop it now and pull yourself together.
No James, we just got swine flu, it makes you feel a bit shit and quite grouchy. If I want somone to tell me to pull my self together, I'll ring my mum.

and its not a conspiracy to keep us all indoors. If you do get it, I think you'll want to stay in.

However, I do agree that constant updates about numbers and deaths don't help much. They don't do that for seasonal flu or any number of other potentially dangerous bugs.

Still, even someone of the bunkum busting stature of Ben Goldacre has pointed out that we can't discount that it could change into something worse and so it is a good idea to monitor it.
Who said they felt they were dying James? The only thing I'm worried about is passing it on. I was going to see one of my oldest friends from school yesterday - she lives in Kenya and is flying back as we speak. Personally I didn't want to give it to her because, media-manufactured or not, my understanding is that while lots of us here can cope fine, the same isn't true of everyone and is probably far less true in less developed countries.
I notice there is no 'lactose intolerance' in africa, india, or such. What happened to:
Y2K (the millenium bug when planes drop from the sky)
Acid rain
E Coli
Flesh eating bug
Bird Flu
Thats just the ones i can think of.
I'm certainly not teasing anyone with flu, in some very very small isolated cases it's lethal but I think it should be put into perspective, thats all.
If you have the flu' i'm sorry 'bout that but lets not pretend you are in immediate mortal danger.
