Anyone Able to Offer Vaccine Advice?
I have an 82 year old aunt who is very nervous about taking a vaccine shot and has not had one so far. She has sadly not received sufficient reassurance from her GP. Basically she had two vaccines in the 50s that she reacted *very* badly to. As a result she has never had another vaccine in her life.
She is extremely fearful of taking a covid vaccine, and her GP has not been able to offer any reassurance.
I am trying to persuade her to have a vaccine, but I need some help to reassure her it is safe. So, I am looking for someone who can help advice either (1) how the current vaccines are different to those she may have had a long time ago and why they are safe, or (2) how we can work out if she might suffer any negative effects from the current vaccines- I know there are ways of testing for allergies that are not high risk.
Any help as to who I can talk to get some information to persuade my aunt to have a vaccine, and possibly which one, would be very welcome.

I am not surprised she feels worried about having the vaccine. There is a detailed leaflet with links to further advice, that I was given when I was vaccinated - I have had 2 jabs now and each time I went for my vaccine they asked if I was scared of needles, had had bad effects from Vaccines in the past etc, before they gave me the jab.:

There was also a very detailed leaflet on the particular jab that I was given on the day. When I searched for it other info came up online too. Your chemist may also be able to help and advise and some of them are offering free vaccines.

Public Health England has a site whether they've gathered together e-mails aimed at different groups of people who might have concerns: https://coronavirusresources.phe.gov.uk/covid-19-vaccine/resources/ there are lots of different ones there so it might be worth having a look to see if you think there's one that might resonate with her.
I work on a project that supports people who are homeless to access healthcare and sometimes we find that nurses are better at explaining stuff than Doctors - would it be possible to contact her surgery and see if there's a nurse or health-worker who might be able to have a chat with her and answer her questions?
If she's had a bad experience in the past it can be very hard to trust people's reassurances, but actually all the evidence suggests that the older you are the less likely you are to have side effects.

Thanks to you and Michele. I will have a look at the links. I think the issue may be that in the 50s she may have been given live virus vaccines and this is what caused the reaction. One was really bad apparently. I want to show her the vaccines are different today (60+ years on)...

I've been volunteering at the John Scott vaccination centre on Green Lanes. We've seen people with the full range of concerns and degrees of apprehension. The lead physicians are extremely good at assuaging fears.
I would suggest you make the appointment for a jab. Go in with her to discuss it with the lead, and she can make her decision there and then. She would be under no obligation to have the vaccine but, from what I've seen, it's much more likely she will agree to getting it.

Yes, I thought of that too. I am in London, she is in the North- her son is in Hong Kong... I am going up, but not until July.
Can you do me a favour Will. The next time you are in can you ask one of the physicians if there is anyone I can call (who would they call if they had a question).
have tried various NHS help lines but they have not really been that much help TBH.

How frustrating. Am happy to ask. It does sound like she's being let down by her GP. We need JVT to offer his services on Cameo.

Jus, does she have a pharmacist she uses regularly and trusts? They are a really underused resource in giving advice and allaying fears. If she can let you know the name and number of her regular pharmacist it might be fruitful to give them a call and explain the problem.

I don’t have any advice for you Justin, but thought this would be a good place to say that if anyone is getting a vaccine soon and doesn’t want Astra Zeneca then if you book in at Islington Business Design centre they are ONLY offering Moderna. I had mine there last week and was relieved to see I was being given Moderna as there’s a history of DVT in my family. When I told them this they said that’s the only one they give everyone there. You just select it from the list when you book online.

Go to the yellow card reporting scheme. Gov.uk.
The vaccine human trials dont and until 2023, the animal trials were skipped because all ferrets died. Hence the "emergency" clearance. So it clearly states on the gov website the trial don't end until 2023. On the yellow card reporting scheme, which gets updated weekly. There were over 900 deaths recorded. But nowhere on the news. It's very unfortunate . And very sad. She has every right to be scared and I would seriously do some research before going ahead. We are not fully informed. Which means we cannot give fully informed consent. Let alone try and get someone else to have one.
