This happened near to my daughter's flat - she heard the victim's screams - a 20 year old girl coming back from a night out - at 7 a.m this morning. Police have ticker-taped the area.

So, John, let me get this straight. You discourage discussion about there being any danger in using the passage out of a wish not to stoke fear, yet it's okay to ramp up fear about using cabs?
I think Jono's advice seems sensible to me. Nothing is completely risk-free, but let's keep a sense of proportion here.
I think it's wrong for the Met to assume that cabs are the be all and end all in safety. They're demonstrably not and in fact this attitude led them to dismiss claims by women who had been sexually assaulted in a Black Cab.
There is safety in numbers is the only advice I would feel comfortable giving. The passage will become unsafe if we stop using it. That is why I jump on people who suggest it is not safe.
If they really think that there is such a problem that women coming home late alone should get a cab (£30+ from central London in the wee hours) then perhaps they should patrol the bus stops on Green Lanes early in the morning.

Unless you're a student for whom £30 is a lot of money. Only rich people should live in Harringay eh.
