Ally Pally UNESCO World Heritage status in the offing?

    Our very own indefatigable champion of Alexandra Palace, Clive Carter, lobbied  the Alexandra Palace Consultative Committee on September 14th last year when the chairman Pat Egan said that the Committee "should recognise the virtues of the proposal" 

Now it goes to the Alexandra Palace Trust Board (trustees = Haringey Council) sometime next month.

    Clive needs support for this, so it's time get writing and lobby our local MPs, & councillors to help his efforts

Thanks for your support Peter. Hugh is a perhaps a little premature with "in the offing". If offing means between five to 15 years, yes, it is in the offing! There are always naysayers of course and I'm sure that if this is successful they will claim they thought it was a great idea all along – it could be called the Private Fraser syndrome (from Dad's Army).

I expect further significant endorsements, but those organisations and individuals who already think its a good idea, include:

If accepted by Unesco, it would join the list of other World Heritage sites.

Clive is right, it is a long process. It will need to go from proposal to the tentative list but as you can see there is a broad range of sites representing a variety of types of heritage. The Lake District seems to have been on there forever but UNESCO are keen to get a broader range of sites on to the list, not just the obvious ones like the Taj Mahal or Yellowstone National Park, so it stands as good a chance as any provided its matched to the right criteria.

There may even be a case for a listing as Heritage in Danger, given its precarious history and future.

Good luck with the proposal, Clive but be prepared for the long haul...

Pleased to report that this evening, at the meeting of the Alexandra Palace Trust Board, this Proposal is now formally adopted as a strategic goal. This isn't likely to result in immediate work and progress, but its now set as a goal.

Getting onto English Heritage's Tentative list could be 10 years away, which might provide enough time to get the south east wing in order and in presentable shape.

For those interested, I've attached the final version of the Proposal. Inadvertently, I left off the name of Lord Melvyn Bragg, but I made sure his kind endorsement was recorded in the Minutes.

But wouldn't we all save a lot of time and money if UNESCO would just nominate The Earth for World Heritage Status?
