Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Hi, a bit of advice. I am looking for a very basis Adobe product for my PC. Essentially I want to be able to:

  • Reduce the size of files scanned in on my scanner
  • Create.pdf documents from word

I may (possibly in the future) need to be able to add comments into .pdf documents etc.

So, requirements are pretty bog standard and basic but given the number of products out there I have no idea where to start, or even if there is a free product I should be using.

Any advice gratefully received.

Plenty of freebies. I use Irfan View for quick image viewing and resizing, it prob does more but havent got round to it.  There are open-access pdf writers too, do a search.  Be a bit cautious downloading programs from strangers as that way trojans lie - reliable download sites like cnet check them first.

Hi Justin

Please look at this website www.ninite.com. On this website you can find a lot of free software and PDF editors as well. Highly recommended

Thanks Marek, that is kind of you. I tried downloading it, but have struggled. Will keep trying.

tick the software what you want and press green button at the bottom. and keep going

I have, my security softwear is blocking the d/l. I go through the process of allowing the d/l to occur and have to start again, and find myself in a  loop of along the d/l, it stopping, me starting again and the security softwear blocking it. I might try downloading the installation file and doing it form a local location- the softwear does not like the fact it is coming form a web site.

I would temporarily disable your security software for 15 minutes and accomplish the task

Will give it a go in the am.

Did it, found the right bit to disable, I was only able to download a .pdf maker though, and it does not appear to have any functionality to reduce file size (one of the 2 key features I was looking for). Any thoughts on that?

Thanks

Could you try CutePDF from ninite.com website?

Hi Justin - have you considered using Google Docs?  It's a web-based system (sort of Google's version of Microsoft Office) and is free - comes with every Google account (e.g gmail) and is well supported from mobile, tablets and desktops - millions of users.

As it all takes place in Google's servers, you'll never need to back anything up. It really comes into it's own if you want to share docs with others and give them selected editing rights.

The wordprocessor is not as comprehensive as Microsoft Word by any means, but it's fine for almost everything and is regularly improved. There is a lot of help available (by Googling for it:)

Oh and you can 'save to PDF' and export/import all the standard Microsoft formats and it does reversion (you can go back to previous versions).

Hey Chris. I use Google docs on various things at the moment, but for the specific use I am looking at (keeping accounts, receipts etc) it will not do what I need it to do. Thanks for the thought though.

I run my accounts on Google spreadsheets (part of Google docs) Justin - make use of the feature of being able to import from one spreadsheet to another and use Docs for invoices.  What won't it do that you need?
