Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

This morning I got an alert about a blog posted on The Anonymous Widower website. I was interested to read some hints about changes that might be happening at Harringay, Green Lanes Station over the coming years.

I asked AW what shape he thought those changes might take and below is the reply:

The platforms will certainly be lengthened for four-car trains and the bridge may need replacing as it looks to be not much better than the one at South Tottenham, they replaced last Christmas. Certainly with the catenary to be mounted on the bridge Network Rail will be making sure it’s strong enough. I think that lifts will be added to the station, as they are being at South Tottenham.

Transport for London are very keen on creating interchanges, as this can solve more than one problem at a time, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see an innovative high level walkway linking the two Harringay stations, sticking to the railway land. Take a look at the Hackney Link, which is two straight level sections connected by stairs and a lift. The design mens passengers walk on the level and lose or gain height in one short piece in the middle. It’s a very good and simple design.

The ultimate interchange here would be to link the GOBlin to the Piccadilly Line. I don’t think it’s possible now, but tunnellers are using more and more innovative techniques and perhaps in a few years, it will be a piece of cake. Remember too, that there’s a short section of Victoria Line test tunnel somewhere under Manor House and there has been plans in the past for a sort out!

You could also see the station being extended eastwards to perhaps serve a housing development to the south of the GOBlin. The developers would pay for the station.

Interesting Hugh, considering that the tube literally runs under this line, and is one of the longest station-less tube runs in London, also, this rail link is now part of the 'M25' London rail loop. A join between the two I am sure is inevitable.

I don't like the sound of a high-level walkway between the two Harringay stations - it would run past my bedroom window!

That's just where the telescope would be added!

As the pigeon flies, it could possibly be *through* the bedroom!

Sounds rather unlikely given that a route between stations following the railway line would in fact be longer than taking a stroll along the existing road. Your bedroom antics will remain forever a mystery to the passing commuter!

I guess it would be zone 3 though given Manor House is 2/3....
Staff nominee - who cares?! ;-)

Further west from this station, where this line goes under the Hertford North to Moorgate service there is a single track joining the two lines (Stapleton Hall Road side). Although there is no passenger service linking the two, I have always assumed that it was a freight link or for switching engines and rolling-stock, has anybody ever seen it used for such?.

I've seen it used for freight traffic, loaded, not just for switching I don't think.

A couple of pictures here of the Orient Express pullman train on it recently.

During the closure of Kings Cross last Christmas, about half a dozen First Hull Trains services were rerouted to/from St Pancras using that track - this was planned and timetabled, rather than a last-minute diversion. It's the only time I'm aware of that a scheduled passenger service has used it.

The Anon Widower has now added a further blog about this issue here.

Well this is all fascinating. I've long wondered why there wasn't another stop on the Piccadilly Line somewhere along Green Lanes, and it looks like there actually is one below St Ann's- albeit a 'ventilation station'. If they did decide to open it for passenger use, where would it emerge at ground level, I wonder?

I like the idea of a glass station/bridge extending over Green Lanes - very modern.
