Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Harringay Independent Party ... your very own local independent councillors.
Elections are just over 18mths away, including national and local council.
One option could be to have independent councillors represent our ward. The comments in this blog post touched on the topic.
We seem to have a natural line-up of three independents ready to go;
Liz Ixer
Adam Coffman
Hugh Flouch
They are probably a little shy about this whole idea. But with encouragement from yourselves ...... there's a chance of bringing real change to your area.

Of course if these three potential candidates refuse bribes of copious pints of beer and packets of peanuts, there maybe others out there willing to come forward. Or maybe you have someone in mind ...

Yes Matt, and of that 35% turnout as much as 81.3% voted for six candidates: 3 LDs and 3 Lab as follows:
15.5% Karen Alexander (LD)
14.9% Gina Adamou (L)
13.8% Carlyn Baker (LD)
12.8% David Schmitz (LD)
12.7% Alpha Kane (L)
12.2% Takki Sulaiman (L)
which leaves just about 18% for the remaining 6 candidates. Justin may recall how many of those were Con and how many Independent.
Better to have our HOL trio outside the system as truly independent gadflies on the collective arse of Labour (or indeed of the Lib Dems, should they ever take power in the Palace of Woodside).
Though we must admit that Alan manages to be a very persistent gadfly within the system!

This thread has been set up to gauge people's opinions on the matter of 'independents'. I now see why, with such defeatist opinions, that they have had little chance up til now.
With independents already selected outside of the big smoke, I can only conclude they are more progressive than the metros. That's a turn up for the books!

The Conservative vote is Harringay was over, IIRC, over 20% in 2002 as we had a local GP running. It declined in 2006 (sadly). Ditto the Greens. In the Mayoral elections (which I have the figures for), Conservatives, Labour and the Greens polled well here. Come the local elections in May, anything could happen. I think I know how Harringay will probably go, but I'm not going to say anything other than it will not go too well for our Lib Dem friends!
Personally speaking, although I want to see as many Conservatives elected as possible, I think a multi-coloured council which included the odd (genuine!) independent wouldn't be a bad thing. That, though, will only happen when PR is introduced in local government - something I support.

You will not find me voting for a bunch of Atheists. I know that they are lazy and crap at sticking up for what they believe in. Why should they be any better at representing us?

I don't know, probably not as they are sandwiched in the middle of the main two indistinguishable parties. We haven't had a Liberal government in nearly a hundred years and its been two party democracy ever since 1922 and that is why the main two don't want PR and the LD do.
PR is the way and a true democratic way forward at every level which means more fringe parties would be represnted. Most EU countries have it, the euros are PR and even Northern Ireland is PR in national elections. Anyone should be able to stand without paying a deposit. This system would give people the reason to vote for who they want in, not for who they don't want in which happens up and down the country now with protest voting.
