Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
The Harringay Independent Party ... your very own local independent councillors.
Elections are just over 18mths away, including national and local council.
One option could be to have independent councillors represent our ward. The comments in this blog post touched on the topic.
We seem to have a natural line-up of three independents ready to go;
Liz Ixer
Adam Coffman
Hugh Flouch
They are probably a little shy about this whole idea. But with encouragement from yourselves ...... there's a chance of bringing real change to your area.

Of course if these three potential candidates refuse bribes of copious pints of beer and packets of peanuts, there maybe others out there willing to come forward. Or maybe you have someone in mind ...

They can't compete with the party 'machines' and brand recognition? It's not unusual for Indies to get elected in the sticks, though.

To be frank, I wouldn’t touch the main three with a barge poll. They have merged into one another so much, it’s hard to tell the difference between all the spin. Until you get PR, you’re never going to have a true representation in government and you will always have this Tory-Labout see-saw, which suits them both as they will only have X amount of years before they are in power again.
Labour has left their working class roots and that’s why you see the rise in fringe parties, especially the BNP, worryingly, (right wing although representing the working classes). The Tories have left their roots and that’s why UKIP have had relative success. For me this is no democracy it’s a swap-ocaracy, which is tedious.
Come the revolution and all that!

That sameness is disappointing for voters isn't it. Kind of makes popping out to a drafty hall to vote a less appealing option.
Start up an internet (based) party and turn the Parliament building into a timeshare hotel for the people .....
Candidates could do conference calls to the masses ... gathered in nearby parks! :)

Yes, single issues often really important for independents but they have to be enormously important and topical to cut through the brand recognition (as Justin says). A lot of people just vote the party ticket (or don't vote at all).
Remember Martin Bell - he's a fairly classic independent. Well known and a classic issue in the form of sleaze (remember those lovely Hamilton folk!). But it didn't work for him the second time around when he stood against another Tory in Essex.

The BNP's economic policies are very Old Labour, B_T. Personally, I think the BNP as being closer to the far-left!

This sort of 'left wing' behaviour is minimal compared to far right extremist activity. G8/20 does attracts a few hooligan elements but can and has been triggered off by police tactics, such tactics can enrage even the mildest of beatnicks. People who comment on such situations are rarely people that have experienced them.
The BNP are indeed right wing not left. It is traditional that the far right support rises when any Labour government is in power and the biggest reason that the BNP has had a surge of success is down to the failure of the Labour party to engage with its tradition grass routes working class support base. New Labour was so intent on grabbing the middle England, middle class vote that it forgot its core support in working class towns and cities up and down the country.
We need choice and we don't have it. I for one am sick to the back teeth of this spineless Tory/Labour see-saw political system.

I always find the term "far right" misleading. If "right wing" means you favour low taxes and less government interference, then "far right" should mean you believe in no taxes and no government interference, but that isn't what the BNP are about. "Far Right" is basically a euphemism for "Fascist".
