Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Who lived in your house in 1935?
When we first moved into our house, we found a Kelly's post office directory from 1935 in the attic which I unearthed again today. It lists all the addresses in the then Hornsey borough and who was the head of household.
Our house was occupied by Arthur Jackson for instance. What is also fascinating is that there was a synagogue on Wightman Road (the current church opposite the mosque) and a lot of residents with German or jewish names living on the ladder (remember, this was 1935).
The unfortunate resident of 26 Priory Gardens N6 was one Mrs Hitler, who I'm sure changed her name by 1939.
If you want to know who lived in your house or anyother address in 1935, just let me know.

Mrs FA Phillips. At he Green Lanes end you had Francis William Smith Ernest Lawrence greengrocers. Is that where Zami's Chicken is now?

It was Frederick Norman Chivers. At the Green Lanes end (103a) there was LA Britton and Sons, salmon curers. I doubt Mrs Addison next door at no.130 could open her windows very often!

No one! Must have been empty at the time the book came out. Ernest Alfred Webber lived at 77 and Mrs Smart at 81.

Great, that covers me without asking!
Does it say what Ernest Webber did? I ask just because when we moved in we found lots of old textile newspapers from the 1920s and 1930s, so I'd always assumed on of the previous inhabitants was in that line of work.

No mention of Mr Webber's business but the commercial directory has a number of local Webber's in it.
Webber Brother was a butcher on Highgate Hill
J&A Webber were a firm of decorators in Malvern Road
Joseph Webber was a provisions merchant at 569 Green Lanes.
Silvanus Webber was a butcher in Archway Road
J&A Webber maybe?
Again a lot of German/jewish names around the Ladder. Does anyone have any information about jewish people settling from Germany around this time? It would have been about the period when a large number of jewish people left Hitler's Germany before it was too late.
