Planning Application to Extend Hotel on Wightman Opposite Harringay Station
Because Haringey Council take a while to update their website, this site's planning application updates are a few days in arrears.
So, in advance of next week's list I'm letting you know about a particular planning application for 60 Wightman Road, the Shelton Hotel. You can see the application here.
If you feel that extending a hotel may not be appropriate in this area, you can object on line by using the Comment on Application button on the page linked to above.
Someone objecting may feel that it it will have a negative effect on our use of local amenities by creating increased traffic, additional noise with late night/early morning arrivals and departures and the potential for an increase in local disturbances depending on the hotel's clientele.

I've no objection in principle. As a hotel it's an amenity for our area, and presumably if extended it may create more jobs?
The hotel's current clientele appears to include ordinary tourists, although I don't know whether it is also used as short-term social housing accommodation or by other groups?
It is ranked the 902nd most popular hotel out of 1026 hotels in London.
Some amusing reviews (of the hotel and our area) from unsuspecting visitors at this site.

Hiliarious - sounds like Fawlty Towers! I have never read such bad reviews and I use trip advisor website all the time. Now I trust that even a mediocre review is ok. A friend of a friend stayed at this hotel. He left after one night and decided to stay at the Hilton, obviously trumatised by the whole experience. I assumed that it was used for emergency social housing too.
But do u think it might be used as a brothel? Then this is one for the police.
I would like to see the Hotels and B&B's around Haringey renovated, but if the premises is going to be used as an elaborate knocking shop, no way!

I've never seen anyone enter or leave this hotel at any time of the day or night and I too always assumed that it was a short term bed and breakfast place. I'm amazed that it has tourists, I don't blame them for being disappointed...it's hardly the most picturesque part of Harringay, despite the wonderful la Vina across the road.
I wonder how the owner can justify 18 new rooms when he does not appear to be filling the ones he's got or impressing the few customers he has already. Perhaps a word with the Safer Neighbourhood team at the next LCSP meeting on the 14th might help us find out if it is known as a site for funny business

I too have never seen anyone use it and also came to the conclusion it was a privately run ‘hotel’ mainly used to filter local tax payers resources.
According to an ex tax inspector friend of mine, this is one of the most common tax fiddles.
I personally wouldn’t like to see it extended. I don’t think it offers Harringay much as it stands. Has anyone ever used the take away place, which is part of the hotel building?
Did it use to be a proper hotel or pub?

Blimey, what dreadful reviews. I guess I'd be a bit disappointed if I ended up there on a romantic weekend in London!
I share others' views really - I had no initial concerns about it but am now wondering what on earth the real story is.

'Stacey42' seemed to have a good time there. Surely that wouldn't be someone from the hotel putting a review up there would it?
It did use to be an ordinary pub - called 'The Railway' I think. It wasn't very exciting, but ordinary.

Those reviews are hysterical!!! I have always wondered who stays there, it looks beyond dodgy, and the reception IS a shack. I think we should all object to it, I cannot see why the owner would need another bunch of rooms. This does not seem like a legitimate business, and if it's for social housing or a brothel we do really not need any more of those around here! I'd suggest we all get on the council web-site and object.

oh, one more thing: This property is in a restricted conservation area, and this application should not be granted. It will increase traffic and pressure on an already overcrowded area.

I noticed a BMW parked up on the pavement the other day with a Belgium number plate. Probably the owners car. Maybe they've got a Europe wide 'business' going on. [Is that fish I smell.]
