Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Pensioners attacked at Harringay Station for having no cigarettes

Police are appealing for information after two men were punched in an apparently unprovoked attack at Harringay rail station, for not having a cigarette.

British Transport Police have released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the assaults, which took place on August 28.

On the day of the attacks, a 69-year-old local man was crossing the footbridge at the station around 1.25pm when he was approached by a man and asked for a cigarette.

The victim, who had no cigarettes, refused and the man punched him in the face, knocking him to the floor, before making his way along the footpath and punching another man, a 60-year-old, in the side of the head.

The first victim was left with cuts to the side of his head and a grazed knee, while the 60-year-old was uninjured.

Anyone with information is asked to contact British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting background reference B10/LNA of 07/09/2012. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Am I being daft in asking how come almost universally CCTV cannot deliver better resolution images, especially when you can now get mobile phones with unbelievable clarity?

This could be pretty much anyone....I guess it loses something in the scanning from a news paper in this example.

Nothing to do with scanning in this instance. I wonder if it's just that since CCTV is 'always on', high resolution images would take too much storage space.

I am no expert, but I would have though storage is not an issue (or it should not in this day an age).

I am sure the CPS would never secure a prosecution on the basis of this! You cannot even read the logo on his top.

Justin: agree with your point about CCTV resolution.

What is the point in having them if at the very time their recording is needed most, the images are so poor as to be near useless?

i think this an image that might have been massively blown up. the cctv is probably framed as widely as possible in order to be able to film more action.

Were any staff members at the station when this happened?  Just a thought.

Interesting question... so far all the comments were about the poor CCTV images. Having staff at the station would be good and perhaps help deter such thuggery. But so many stations now are unstaffed and I always find that bridge by Harringay Station unattractive, even in the middle of the day. I'd rather have someone around than a camera.

Harringay station is only staffed between 6.00 (I think) and 12.00 on weekdays. We've all at times complained about facilities at the station and some of us are wondering if the current consultation relating to possibly changes to services could be used to put renewed pressure on whoever ends up being in charge to redesign the whole bridge, access and ticket hall.

The following has just been messaged to me by PC Glyn Kelly:

BTP sent us images and this one is blown up the ones we were sent were not. The wording on the sweatshirt is the word`CROSS` above the word `HATCH`. Suspect ran off towards Quernmore Road.

this is totally unacceptable, and this people if just a coward and they think they big do what they like and own the town.

Well, ill say they no and will not. to many of this as........ over confident robbery and walk away calmly.   Why we all stand by and do nothing. We as a citizen shout at them and call police's. i believe one start shouting many will fellow. otherwise we all has to take this kind of shits. this low life scam.

Low life indeed... I guess people have become frightened because of the frequency of knives being used and people killed just for complaining about someone putting their feet on a seat. I would think twice before putting myself in harm's way nowadays. I got pushed over by a young woman once just because I had walked past her and her baby in stroller too quickly and in a 'stuck up' way... err.... ? !

I thought the Olympics had brought us all together but depressingly crime and criminals carry on as usual...

ya, those coward always carry kinfe and yes i agree you has to be careful.

well, if we all stand up together, we can defeat this low life scam from the street. I seen a lot and yes, ill tell them excuse me can you put your leg down. as i want to sit. i pay fro me sit and your only pay for one sit and a leg sit. I can see he no happy at all. I dont care i take out me mobile and looking at the photo. as to me he dont excess
