Liz to lead rubbish session at this week's Area Assembly

This week's Area Assembly is the first under its new chair, Cllr Zena Brabazon.
Zena wants more resident involvement so she's handing the floor over to the residents.
Liz has been asked to have first bash and is leading a session on rubbish issues.

Would that "Zena wants more resident involvement so she's handing the floor over to the residents." approach would spread eastwards.... I've never yet come out of one of these without needing to bang my head on the wall, they are so tightly controlled by the councillors. Democracy, schemocracy.

I am impressed with the fact you managed to get a sound clip into your post- you learn something new every day.
If you get the time to add something into your presentation Liz, can you mention that I think it appropriate that Veolia either (1) pick up rubbish they drop when doing a bin round (rather than leave it there) or (2) schedule one of their street cleaners to come down the road after the bins have bene down. It is not appropriate to leave more rubbish in the street than was there to start with as often happens...
And while we are at it... A lot of the rubbish that blows up the bottom half of the Ladder roads (the GL end) seems to come from the traders. What chance Veolia/ the council can spend a bit of time with the traders to encourage them to clear up their own rubbish and be a bit more responsible about it?

Liz. How did it go last night? Just to add to my original post. This is the scene that that greeted us this morning after the green waste collection... I will dig out the name of the Veolia manager I spoke to in the past and pass on my comments.

Liz, wow thanks for taking this up. Raleigh, Sydney, Frobisher, Lausanne Road etc are all just as bad. Houses with two wheelies just about work but any more and it is just horrid. I took a walk on Sunday and there was such a mess and overflowing bins everywhere, but even now they have been emptied it still looks like a wheelie bin grave yard. Haringey should be really embarassed about this. Maybe press or youtube coverage is needed. Haringey only ever seems to react after bad press as common sense does not seem to apply.

How did it go? Well, the presentation itself went well and I tried in the short time I had to convey the variety of issues raised in the 14 threads that are currently running on the site and via Twitter. On operational matters, I think we had acknowledgement of the problems but really only short term solutions were discussed. I think they hope it will settle. It seems they were 'surprised' at how many people immediately began to recycle and there was much talk of unexpected tonnage. This is encouraging although a little odd that they didn't expect this to happen. They are also overwhelmed by the number of people negotiating their needs re number and size of bins hence the long delays to get bins. Again a little surprising that they didn't expect people to engage with this at quite the level they did but again another good sign that most people are trying to solve their immediate difficulties.
On less immediate issues like the effect on streetscape of the wheelie, use of food waste bins and engagement of those who are creating the biggest impact re unrecycled and piled up rubbish, there was a less satisfying response from those in charge. We had a fruitful and mature discussion though and lots of points were noted and suggestions taken which will be compiled into a report that will be published as soon as we get it.
Meanwhile a big message was report it so do so as there are some who say that as most people aren't reporting problems to them then the problems don't exist. I have confidence that some of our councillors from both parties are sensitive to the issues and are willing to do something about it. I did feel that Veolia were listening and some council officers. We need to keep plugging away. Here's a copy of the presentation. It's mainly pictures since they speak a thousand words.
