91bus, makes no sense whatsoever

You’re right Victoria.  The 91 goes straight across at that point and on to the clock tower in one direction or straight across and on to Church Lane going the opposite direction .  How it ended up taking a right/left turn at the roundabout is a mystery.

It collided with a car before hitting the building. I'd guess at one of them not giving way at the roundabout and the bus trying to avoid the car. Bus heading south and a car joining the roundabout in front of it from Ferme Park Rd maybe.

Yes that sounds like what happened. If the 91 was travelling south along Tottenham Lane towards the clock tower and if it was a collision with a car then the car must have pulled out from Ferme Park Rd and hit the nearside front end of the bus causing the bus to swerve right and into the wall on the right side of Tottenham Lane. If this scenario is correct then the car did not yield to oncoming traffic approaching from the right as is the law. Its a miracle that no one got seriously hurt.

The 41 bus route crosses the roundabout as Michael describes; buses on the 91 route circle the roundabout in order to change direction, the roundabout marks 'end of route'. It looks to me as though the 91 bus in the recent crash continued turning instead of straightening out.

The roundabout had to be remade before the New Routemaster buses could turn there, in fact some in the fleet are shorter in order to reduce their turning circle, but it's still a very tight turn, perhaps that's a factor. Also, releasing grip on the steering wheel and expecting the steering to straighten out naturally sometimes doesn't work when on maximum lock and under acceleration, with embarrassing/frightening results, fortunately accident-free the last time I experienced it.

Doh!  Thanks Gordon

I knew the bus driver of the 2001 bus crash. We trained together back in the late 90s :)

What did he say about how that crash happened?

It was a her. I honestly don't know as I left bus driving the year before and I didn't keep in contact with her. I found out through a mutual friend.

In the 2001 photograph, I like the way the first-floor net curtains are still in place.

I have to say, I'm amazed at the apparent lack of damage to the bus (a broken window) and it seems to have demolished the side of that building!

I was told the 91 was heading to the roundabout. The car involved had french number plates
