Help clear the passage
Update: Lots of people have volunteered, so we'll all be out at 10am Sunday. My number is 07766 990123 if you need to get salt or any other problems.
Update 2: A huge thank you to all the volunteers who came out yesterday to clear the snow. We've done a fab job.
If you've walked up or down it recently you'll know that the passage is an absolute ice rink at the moment. We're not going to get any help from the council to fix it, so I'd like to get a bunch of volunteers to commit to coming out on Sunday at 10am to clear part of the passage.
There were a bunch of Ladder Dads who committed tonight, so if you'd like to join us on Sunday morning to help clear a part of passage so we can all use it to get to work, school or the shops then sign up below.
Just say which bit (e.g. Hewitt to Seymour) you'd like to work on, and we'll all meet out there around 10 am on Sunday.
Bring salt, shovels and any sand/grit you might have, and let's all make the passage a little bit safer.
I know that together we can make a difference - so let's do it.

That's funny. In my translation, I had treated "omnia" as modifying "labor" (as in Gallia omnia). This produced, "Even without rock salt the Liberals will conquer all of Labour." But that's the great thing about the classics - endless opportunities for reinterpretation.
On the other part of your message, as you know we all took advantage of the thaw by clearing away the snow altogether. On reflection, I don't think that this will cause harm because of the residue of salt and grit which we put down. Still, the word for everyone is to be extremely careful.

I fear your take might offend some of the rules of gender, number and case - but you're right: the Romans weren't into PC rigour, so why should we be?

My guess, and it isn't anything as grand as "advice", is that we would be most unlikely to be making the situation any worse and that that being the case, we couldn't be said to be responsible for any mishap that might occur. Certainly, no-one should regard us as in any way providing assurance that the Passage is safe for everyone. Clearly, it is only for the fit and the sure-footed.

Question: I've cleared the snow from our driveway. Am I opening myself up to a claim if someone slips?
This is an urban myth. If you do the reasonable thing and clear your drive, you are not opening yourself up to a possible claim, except in very exceptional circumstances.
"This is a common misconception," McQuater says. "By clearing the snow from your paths, you do not invite any extra liability that wouldn't have existed had you done nothing and left the snow on the ground. The only circumstance in which you might invite a claim was if you acted completely unreasonably, and somehow created a new latent hazard that had not existed before your actions."
For example, if you poured huge quantities of water on to your drive which then froze to create a dangerous hazard, that in theory might open you up to a claim, he suggests.

Salt supplies: if anyone doesn't have enough salt for their bit of the passage then I'll have some spare salt at Hewitt Road, so do come get some.
Does anyone have any sand or grit they can contribute?

I will have a go at Umfeville to Burgoyne, and come out for 10.00 am Sunday morning.

If anyone has a motor, there's a load of grit outside of Bounds Green Ambulance depot, if you get caught you'll probably get nicked.. but to help the community y'know.
I'll be working so I'm afraid I wont be able to offer my assistance, good luck peeps.

We have three bags builders sand, will come out at ten and help Seymour Hewitt section.
Will builders sand be ok, anyone know? Happy if someone wants to come get a bag, let me know.

Builder's sand works great - have used some on Hewitt Road and it really makes a difference on icy stretches.

Hi, Lucy & I hope to give Burgoyne to Cavendish a go once we get some salt tomorrow morning. The Passage is important because of the schools! Be glad if anyone else wants to join us. I would agree that clearing the up - downs would be a good thing too but have to see how this all goes. Burgoyne pavements and road are absolutely treacherous. Best Kevin
