Political Declaration

Political Declaration - Updated February 2024.

I joined the Labour Party when I lived in Islington in the 1970s & resigned from the Party in October 2020.

During 40+ years living in Haringey Borough, at different times I had various voluntary roles in Tottenham Labour Party This included constituency and local wards secretary.
I was also an elected local councillor from 1998 to 2014.

I decided not to seek re-election in May 2014. I continue to endorse David Lammy Tottenham's MP.
I have moved from zero expectations of Keir Starmer MP to a wholly negative opinion.

The Tottenham riot in August 2011 was decisive for me. Haringey Council's practical response immediately post-riot showed the best of local government and local council staff. It also showed the leadership qualities of David Lammy who spoke out with passion for our community.

By contrast, and in my personal opinion, the Council Leader until 2018 and her close allies failed completely to respond to the riot other than with banalities and by following previous failed policies. Colluding with vile plans such as Council Home demolition and social cleansing which would prolong and deepen the factors leading to the riot.

In its latter years that Leadership appeared to lack any left-of centre vision, let alone socialist principles and policies. I and other Labour councillors were asked to support what seemed Tory policies.

The Joe Ejiofor leadership which succeeded them, badged themselves as a "Corbyn Council" and "Momentum".  To me their actions appeared right-wing. But less competent, and just as unwilling to learn. Due to the dysfunctional Leader and cabinet system Joe Ejiofor was able to accumulate power.

In May 2021 the Group of Labour councillors narrowly voted to replace Cllr Ejiofor with Cllr Peray Ahmet as Leader. She has selected a cabinet committed to working as a team rather than - as - too often in the past - a petty ruler with courtiers.
_______________

My wife Zena Brabazon was re-elected as one of the three Labour councillors for Harringay ward.

Hi Alan - the £900,000 figure came from an article in the Ham n High when this issue was first flagged up. I have not seen it in the official council documentation but when the idea was first proposed a figure of somewhere between £600,000 and just over £1m was mentioned in that documentation. Certainly no-one form the council has come out and disputed that figure.

Best Wishes,

Brian

Thanks for your help with my hoarder neighbour. I'm actually in Seven Sisters Ward - but even if there isn't a Seven Sisters councillor who deals with this type of problem, I'd be interested to get any type of gen from the other councillors.

Local government authorities (and no doubt national ones) need more representatives who truly represent the people who elected them, rather than being in thrall to a party machine.

But then, I'm a Liberal Democrat, so just now I'm complicit in the dirty business of governing politics! I think though that there is a difference between compromise and incompetence.

Alan, you would certainly have my vote if I lived in Tottenham Hale. Although as a member of the LibDems I might get into mild trouble with my party

Alan, re CCTV car parking - i believe there was a small space opposite (which is all a Smart car needs). I was unconvinced by teh council response. it is my belief that the driver had gone to the shops as the passenger appeared embarrassed when i took my photos. haven't seen it there again though!

"The Ning email facility is very limited". Very limited? Not really. It's a messaging system, not intended as an email replacement and in that we hope it does quite well. It allows people to exchange private messages without requiring them to trade emails.

When I have a moment I will fill out m profile more (though as my name is fairly unusual, it's pretty easy to see who I am - as long as you take the guess that I'm not a mid-west US fisherman!), though worth noting that my comments so far (a) haven't been party political, and (b) aren't with my work hat on.

Thanks, John. Though I hope this is one invitation I won't be able to accept.

Cllr Harry Lister has called this evening's meeting for 7pm - which is thirty minutes before the start of the first part of the Labour Group AGM. Among other things the AGM elects the Chief Whip for the Municipal Year.

I've now posted Cllr Lister's latest email, with my reply, here on Flickr.

You'll see that despite my asking several times, I still haven't had Cllr Lister's list of my nine Flickr pages he objects to. Perhaps it's just photos taken in daylight and fresh air he finds so scary.

He insists that I won't "get sight of the report" until 7 pm this evening. Which is a bit late to start writing a rebuttal, calling witnesses etc. So I'm assuming that this evening Labour councillors - the vast majority of whom are a decent hardworking bunch of people - will recognise this is a flagrant breach of the principles of Natural Justice, and won't let Lister's showtrial go ahead.
