Because the nature of the problems with the Virgin network are local, I've often wondered what the impact would be of some neighbourly solidarity with the collective cancellation of direct debits.
Well you could go to any other provider but it wouldn't guarantee a similar problem wouldn't occur in the future. I would suggest once Virgin have fixed it it will be as good as any other. Still should not stop people claiming compenation, though.
The Virgin network is a bit special because it doesn't come through telephone lines but through the old Cable London coaxial cable network. That's why they can offer 300Mb and nobody else comes close. Their problems are entirely unique to them so I think they can be forced to increase power and upgrade equipment as they install new households, not as they reach capacity and wait for users to complain.
They all say "fibre" but the last bit to your house from the boxes in the street that get vandalised all the time is coaxial cable. Over a phone line it's copper of varying degrees of quality.
Thanks. I always wonder why companies such as Virgin and Openreach which are presumably at the cutting edge of technology can't seem to be able to develop a method of securing the doors on their street cabinets.
Someone should invent something - perhaps called " a padlock " ?
If everybody affected by this could be organized to write individually to complain to the council, it might prompt them into earlier action. Perhaps some of the residents could leaflet the area. I don't live on Wightman road and my Virgin is fine so I am obviously not motivated to be an activist in this, hence my long-distance suggestions.
Hi Margaret, I'm also on Effingham road and with Virgin - I've been having the same problem and when I saw the 28th fix date had lapsed, I called them and complained (I rang before but the operator always said it should be fixed by the 28th). They basically said what your engineer said - they're waiting on the council and there's no date when it'll be fixed. It's annoying because I keep getting messages saying 'It's almost fixed, the engineers are doing final checks'. Anyway, I complained saying that they can't provide their contract service, so I was allowed to leave Virgin without any penalty.
Though, an added annoyance is that my flat doesn't have a BT phone line or aerial! So need to get them installed for any non-virgin service!

The last time Virgin claimed that they hadn't yet got permission to take up the road, it was because they hadn't actually put in an application to do so.

I've just had an automated message to say the problem is fixed! Annoyingly, I've already cancelled my service! Can anyone on Effingham confirm that it's working again? I think I can rejoin (I don't really want to pay £130 for an aerial and new BT line!).
