Harringay online

Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

For those who would like to add their name to the petition to preserve the tree on Cavendish Road, the petition has just gone live.

It's here.

It needs signing in first, but I think it's worth it, as this is the one that really counts. It's for people living, working or studying in Haringey only, so it might not get that many signatures.

If anyone feels like contributing to the bigger Change.org petition, too (I set this up as I didn't know how long it would take for the Haringey one to go live, and thought time might be of the essence -- though we're having a stay of execution for a little while now) -- anyway, the link to this one is

here.

It's got 106 supporters to date and a lot of rather brilliant comments, that I'm very much cheered and touched by. Thank you to everybody who has signed it already.

Well done Maren - you finally got me to sign up for a Haringey account, which I've been resisting doing. I feel it's more likely to be taken notice off by addressing the council directly. Did you manage to speak to the tree officer?

Sorry, meant to reply. Thank you so much for signing. And yes, Clare Pappalardo did get back to me. She said they'd postpone the removal for the time being, and her line manager would look into the matter further. This sounded very positive, and I'm very glad that no irreversible steps are being taken rashly; equally, the fate of the tree still hangs very much in the balance, and I'm wary of celebrating too early.

Hi Maren, I've added the link to your petition to my photos of the tree on Flickr. Plainly, Zena doesn't need a petition to persuade her.

I didn't think she did after meeting her! But I thought for her to have a lot of backing backing would not do any harm either. I'll get in touch with her and Peray soon to ask when and how to present them (there is currently also a children's petition, run by my daughter...

Thank you for adding the link on Flickr -- lovely photos, and I've also left a comment!

Keep up the fight, too many tree fellings go unopposed in Haringey. The Tree Trust for Haringey and the Haringey Tree wardens both need support to try and stop these sort of things happening, and to help look after Haringey's street trees.

Thank you for your support! It is good and reassuring to know that I'm not the only one feeling this way.

Maren have you updated Zena on this latest move? She's been out and about electioneering. But I don't think anyone's from the council has mentioned an engineer to her.

Ah -- I just assumed she'd know -- sorry. It was pure chance that I was working from home that day and happened to look out of the window.

All that I know really I've retold in my TLS blog, that I sent to Zena. While I'm at it, there's also an excellent Guardian piece by Ian Jack on the value of street trees.

The Planter on Cavendish needs some tiding, there should be some plants establishing themselves from last year, I'll be around this week, so will investigate and hopefully catch up in the process. Haringey council are far too quick to remove trees without any replacement plan coordinated, last time I checked, there were 100 trees in the council depot, we need to make sure the empty tree wells are planted, and tree removal is carefully considered, as it is also expensive, reducing our tree budget.

The attitude is clear, Hornsey retains trees, Harringay loses.
How Green are our Councilor's? Trees raise our spirits, filter pollution and street noise, their cost is tangeable to our well being.

Bourgoyne Rd has seen a mature tree cut off at half mast, which is upsetting, as this is the last of the established tree lined roads on the Ladder. Tree removal causes shrinkage which is not ideal for house foundations, so I often question the pace at which trees are grubbed out. Thank you for taking action, and I will support your efforts where I can.

Thank you Matt! I couldn't agree more.

And yes, you are too right about the planters. I've been a bit short on time this year, but am definitely up for a bit of sorting out there. I'm growing a few sunflowers at the moment especially for the planters!

Ace, the one great thing about gorilla gardening is it takes you up and down the ladder and you have time to experience each road and it's residents, I now think of Councillors as Wardens, less preoccupied with the politics and more focused on connection and action.

Take up a fork, anyone is welcome to take a little ownership of a planter. Our kids can even take a plastic bottle from the recycling and water some plants on the ladder, it may even get them out of bed in the morning for school.

Enjoy!

Matthew, please don't let councillors off the political hook. Yes they can and should help enable connections and oil the wheels for action. Or in this case, touch the brakes while there's a closer careful look before decisions are made about smaller matters - like a street tree - which can't be undecided.

Many of Haringey's councillors will be delighted to have the excuse that it's enough to do their local ward stuff. While leaving larger and key political issues to the higher powers. In this case the Holy "Cabinet" and The Dear Leader herself.  Obedience now enforced not by Cllr Jogee, but the new Inquisitor General - the Party Chief whiplash.

Matthew, by all means cultivate your guerilla gardens. But please don't ignore the barbarians at the gates especially when they are dressed up ever-so-nicely and call themselves 'progressives'.
