Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Just had a quick look through Lammy's twitter posts to see if he's voting against the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill coming before the house this week. Various Labour MPs have taken a stand against the three-line whip put in place by Corbyn.

Each MP has to decide if they are voting on behalf of the country which narrowly voted to leave the EU or for their constituency (who voted them in). The constituency of Tottenham voted strongly to remain.

Anyone know if Lammy has stated how he will vote?

Don't know about Lammy, but Catherine West, MP for Hornsey & Wood Green has said she will vote against, in line with her constituents who had the highest percentage of remain votes in the country.
I have arrived at a similar assessment, though the Greens will still vote to remain, (they don't have a wip,) and side with the Lib Dem's against Article 50. It doesn't thrill me to see Labour so week on this issue.

Ah, that  would be the Libdems who kept the Tories in power for 5 years, lied and lied about their manifesto on education and voted for a huge round of cuts to public services and helped the Tories with privatising the NHS.

Helped the Tories continue New Labour's work on privatising the NHS...

What a load of nonsense. Libdems are the only choice of the left? Dont make me laugh. As Philip Foxe above alluded to, their record from 2010-2015 is evidence of their actual values.

Unfortunately, with so few MPs in the House of Commons, the LibDems are unlikely to have much impact on the vote...

Thanks Lesley. Michael, regular contributor on here, might know as he's an active Tottenham Labour member ...

FPR, I've heard of Green members switching to the LibDems.

In November David Lammy said he would vote against article 50 - that was before the 3-line whip, but he has rebelled before and was very vocal about his opposition to leaving the EU. I've just written to ask him to vote against - perhaps he would to hear from more of his constituents?

I'm so gutted that we 48% of 'the people' who voted Remain have no-one to represent us, or stick up for the rights of all the Europeans living in this country who are being treated disgracefully. There is no such thing as an opposition any more.

What do you mean " the rights of all the Europeans who are being treated disgracefully ?

What has changed ?

What about all the people in Tottenham who voted to leave ? who represents them ?

John D,

EU citizens who have been living in this country for decades, who are perhaps married to British partners and have children born here, and who have worked and paid taxes and NI, are being treated as 'persona non grata' , with no security that they will be able to stay here after Brexit. Several have even been told they should leave immediately as they are no longer entitled to healthcare.

Applying for residency is a bureaucratic minefield - an 89-page form requiring detailed information about every single time they have left country over the years, and they must surrender their passport to the Home Office for six months or more, which means they cannot travel anywhere whether for work or personal reasons, which for many people is simply not possible or practical.

All this is so that they can be used as bargaining tools with the EU in negotiations, but it is wrecking lives and shows a huge disrespect and disregard for people who until June 23rd had equal rights to live here and of course had no say in the referendum. Brexit or not , they deserve better and we should be ashamed of the way our government is treating them.

Maddy: if true that is shocking.

But through my teaching, I know about 40+ Bulgarians and about the same number of Hispanics. And not one has ever said that they have been told that they are not welcome or may have to leave. I have just helped one fill in an application form for employment with the police - a sensitive area surely - and that form was only 19 pages long.

I have a class today and another on Monday and will ask for their first-hand views.

John, I've seen comments about this elsewhere as well, possibly also via the NHS. Nasty things are happening ...
