Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Acute Mental Health Services
Many people here will be familiar with the dearth of acute mental health services. The South Maudsley Hospital seems to be one of the few serious providers left. We have St Anne's but I know from experience their services are quite limited. It seems to be very difficult for Haringey residents to access mental health care outside our region as its a matter of having an arrangement with others and it costs money which is in short supply. GPs simply can't refer without a funding arrangement. Does anyone know a way to access care at South Maudsley without this?

It seems the first port of call is always the GP. They then fiddle and delay for ages. They are supposed to find out if the CCG has an arrangement with the provider and if not tough luck.

I'd investigate self referral if I was you.
The amount of times I've waited for ages to get a GP appointment just to be referred to other clinics to be told I could have self referred has driven me to distraction at times!!

This may not be appropriate at all (and it is a sad indictment at the state of mental health services that I'm even suggesting this) but if someone in any way has issues with drugs and alcohol as well as mental health, it is sometimes quicker to refer yourself to a drug and alcohol service and then they can refer you to a mental health service. The referral route seems to often work quicker. Sadly that's probably because the the appalling nature of mental health provision means that a lot of people are self-medicating ....
