Library books fall by two million a year amid warnings of cuts and closures

The number of books in Britain's public libraries is falling by more than two million a year as experts warn they are a "soft target" for cuts as councils face a recession budget squeeze.

this post may digress slightly.
I have noticed a ruse being pulled by haringey libraries service. they have offers usually like this: take out 4 books get a dvd free. this may seem innocent yet if you think about it, the records will now show more books being lent therefore more people are reading. not so !
i have spoken to some library staff. they say that most people taking the offer want the free dvd not the books often the books are returned immediately so they don't have to take them home (not always of course).
also there has been a surge in books being borrowed by authors begining with surname A.
because the A shelf is nearest to the desk.
before the library starts congratulating itself again for promoting literacy i hope it will concede my point.
