I haven't any issue with the motivation behind the project. ..but the design is dreadful..both ugly and impractical... a couple of benches would be an infinite improvement...

I'm sorry to hear you don't like the design. It was created by an accomplished local architect, who as everyone else did, gave her time for free to design a bespoke seating arrangement for her community . The reasoning behind the design was to be able to create a seating area that wasn't intrusive, used reclaimed and environmentally friendly materials, that planting could be used underneath and around to create a small ecology garden to compliment the trees it will be built around, and that there wasn't any large areas of flat seating to encourage antisocial behaviour.
We did offer the chance for all of our community to have an input into the design of the space, with a well publicised public meeting held at Stroud Green Library.
I personally think its a wonderful piece of street furniture, and even more special as it has been designed by a local resident for her community to enjoy.

A bit of healthy debate sounds good to me. We should 't be saying down with anything. And architects are used to disagreements about their designs - it's really important. The proof will be in how the seating thing gets used & who by - let's see then. It just looked a bit dominant to me for a small area in the image. I'm a bit disconcerted that council are harrassing people on the Green Lanes project - are you able to share more?

I can't see how anyone could have thought that red metal cubes were in keeping with the surrounding environment and it will be used as a bike hangar as a result. I think if the design was meant to not be intrusive, they've failed. What is the necessity for the higher areas at all? As I said originally, a couple of benches would have been better. And where are the bins?

You mean that we have to accept your view about what is "positive" and not criticise - what makes you think that your coffee clique are the only ones who care about the locality?
Before you arrived on the scene two/three years ago, I as an individual had raised with the council the matter of the demolition of the Edwardian shopfront in 2008 at 45 Quernmore Rd (now the Istanbul Supermarket); the demolition of the Edwardian shopfront at 41 Quernmore Rd (previously the off-licence); the work carried out at 38 Quernmore Rd; the removal of a London Plane tree down the road in Stapleton Hall Road, the removal in 1986 of a pitched roof in a house in Stapleton Hall Road and its replacement by a box; the replacement of wooden sash windows by upcv windows etc., etc.
So what make you think that you are the only person who cares about the neighbourhood and are above criticism?
But now time for a cup of tea.

What a shame that such a positive initial post from a group of proactive people doing what 99% don't bother to attempt has met with such negative discussion. I hope others attempting to bring about change in their local area to make it safer, cleaner and more enjoyable for all will not be discouraged. I believe most people probably feel like me but sadly we rarely make time to offer support and encouragement. Power to you.

Please see my earlier posting about consulting "the community" before bidding for the money. I go down Quernmore Rd nearly every day and I don't remember seeing any publicity about the design of the seating or the plan to paint over the mural. "Proactive people" should remember that they are not an elite hatching up ideas for the plebs. Consult, consult, consult.
On the issue of the painting over of the mural, those on the SGRA mailing list received an email yesterday giving details of the committee discussion on the mural. Whilst a range of views were discussed about the mural it appears that the painting over of the mural was not discussed. "Painting over the mural to advertise the regeneration project wasn’t discussed at all." So I ask who decided to paint over the mural and by what authority?
Its not being negative to ask who carried out this piece of vandalism. Yes vandalism? If some lads had of painted graffiti over the mural the chattering coffee classes would have been up in arms. NB have a look at Google Street View the mural wasn't in the bad condition that some say.
Neither is it being negative to query the design - after all "the community" will have to live with this.

Konrad, I am not an elected individual, elite or spokesperson, nor have I ever proclaimed or wanted to be one. As such, I am not under any obligation to pander to you, nor enter into any dialogue with you regarding the plans that have been widely advertised, discussed and supported by the wider community - not just your laughable categorisation of my customers as the 'coffee classes' . I have offered the only information I am able to, and really have nothing more to say to you. Perhaps you should consider spending an equal amount of time supporting your community, rather than being an armchair critic of those that are.

There's a common perception that where something is done on a voluntary basis and people give up their time and spend their resources in furthering that thing, then it's automatically a good thing. Any objections are negativist and mean-spirited.
If I offer to help an old lady across the road and she refuses because she doesn't actually WANT to cross the road is she being obstructive ? Am I justified in forcing her to cross the road because my intentions are altruistic ?
People may, or may not, like the proposal or the design but the fact that it was a voluntary effort is irrelevant.

Thanks for that input John. Although I'm not convinced it's a common perception, but rather something you have just dreamt up to fit your agenda. Please see above, and my advice to Konrad - perhaps the both of you could do with moving away from the computer for a bit?
