I'm starting my own business in December and I need an accountant to help with getting set up as self employed and advising me on what I need to do for my tax returns. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced and friendly accountant? Thanks.

I used David Martin last year from a recommendation I saw on HoL. He is certainly friendly, seemed reasonable rates although I didn't do extensive comparisons. Big plus was that I was able to meet up locally in coffee shop, all very relaxed.
Good luck with you new business.

As far as I know Haringey Council still operates a free business advice service out of Wood Green library which lets you speak to a real accountant and other business advisors. If it's just becoming self-employed/doing a tax return that you'd like advice about, I wouldn't worry too much, because you could probably sort this out by yourself just by contacting HMRC. Bear in mind you'd have a year or so before you needed to do your first tax return, so really it's just a matter of keeping records/receipts of your incomings and outgoings. But if you're planning to employ someone on the books or likely to cross the VAT threshold (somewhere around £80,000, I think) then you should make it a priority to fix yourself up with an accountant.
All the best
