Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I suppose this comes under chat.

Did anyone live in either Kimberley Gardens or Chesterfield Gardens in 1953-60. If so I would like to get in touch to refresh my mind (am now in late 70s) as to some of the people around at that time.

Thank you

G'day, StephenBin. Sorry to hear that your recollections of the 50 and 60, was very depressing, for You. As for " living in the Past !!! " Roy and I were only " kicking over the old traces " seening that we were talking about " Harringay " in the 40,50 and 60s. Yes, we have moved on with our lives, I left Harringay in November 1964, and move to Brisbane, Australia. I have had a Wonderful life out here and brought up 4 Boys and one Beautiful Daughter, who have all been successful in there life's, so far. Roy has moved down to Corwall and loving it, fishing most of his spare time.
You mention Irish, Blacks,Gays and un married Mothers!!!!!!!!! Well I'll let you into the knowledge, that as for me and my mates, who were a mix of all the above races. I did my National Service with 4 Black and loads of Irish Guys and quite a few Gays and ( sorry no unmarried Mothers )I loved every minute, of my 2 Years with them Guys, some of us still keep in touch.
Last to mention, I have been back to the UK 4 times and each time it makes me feel sadder, especially Harringay !!!!!!! London still has a Place in my Heart but I could never live there again, sorry. My Sister, who lives in Eastbourne, and a few old School Friends, is one reason I keep going back, all the rest of my Family are out here, all 6 of us. Bye StephenBin, hope your life has improved, since the 50 and 60, in Harringay. Best of Luck, Stay Safe. Eddie

Your son/brother?? Gary was in my class at school. I still remember his last day at school before he went off to Brisbane in 1964.. But I believe he came back to the U.K.? We were quite close at school and I missed him a lot and often thought about him after that.

My life in Harringay was fine in the 50s, 60s.. I mean, kids know no better. It's only later that one realises what actually was going on.

I've been to Australia a couple of times, done Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Cairns as well as Uluru. I saw exactly the same developments there, as happened in many other western democracies. In fact, parts of Sydney are not that special at all - aggression and drunkeness. I now live in Germany and we have no 'no go areas' in my city.. You can still walk about alone at night. But as for London,  I doubt Londoner's have ever had the chance to live such a varied life, just how they want, like they do now.

What was the catalyst then, to make you leave 'The golden London of the 1960s'?

We'll Blow Me Down!!!!!!!! What a small World it is, You knowing my Son Gary, from way back in 1964 and also remembering that he came to Brisbane!!!!! When he left Woodlands Park School, I asked his Teacher, how he would have done in the 11 plus exams ??? to which the reply was " not very good " While we were having our Medical in Australia House, they discovered he was short sighted. So as soon as we arrived in Brisbane,we got him glasses and he started to make top marks at School, which made him feel a lot better in himself. After leaving High School, he went on to Uni. After a few years and lots of Ladies in his life, he moved it to a House, with his latest Lady and it looked like they were going to tie the knot, but he got cold feet!!!!!! Then made up his mind to go and visit a few mates, one was in America and the other in Canada, spent 6 months in America and about 12 month in Canada. He tried to get working visas for both Countries, but had no luck, so after leaving Canada, he finished up in London, in December 1983, flat broke, he was determined not to ask me for money, which I never found out about till I went over to the UK, in September 1984. By that time, he was on his feet, we had 4 great weeks together, seeing all my friends and my younger Sister, who lives in Eastbourne. Now there was a coincidence with Gary and me, when I left England, I was 28 and 3 months and when Gary left Australia, he was 28 and 3 months, how weird!!!!!!!!!! He did go back to Uni, Oxford and got a Degree in Business, and started his own Firm in Accounting in Regents Street. He then retired in 2009.
Sorry to say I have lost touch with Gary, but the last time I heard he was living in Finchley. Thanks for remembering Gary, good luck to You in Germany Stephen, with all those new immigrants!!!!!!!!!! Stay Safe.
Eddie.

Yes, our teacher was a Mr A W Shepherd, a nasty piece of work from Cumberland, who once waited for me and beat me outside the school grounds on Etherley Road (holding me and punching my back four or five times), for calling to a friend in passing, 'oh look, there's ol' Mr Shepherd' - as you do as kids. These days he'd loose his job, back then it wasn't even mentioned. The good old days? I dunno.

My cards were marked with him after that incident.

Stephen, I seem to remember ( somewhere in the back of my mind ) Gary talking about a Teacher named " Mr Shepherd, " Eddie

lose, not loose.. I know..   spellcheck is my excuse..

Regarding your Question, " What was the Catalyst for leaving golden London of the 1960? " Well the main reason was, my three Sisters were over in Australia and kept writing these letters with all good News, and how there lives had changed for the better, also loads of photos of there Homes and the Lovely Beaches. At that time I had 3 Young Boys and I could not see any prospect for them in London. I had spent 10 months of my National in Kenya, so I had found out what it was like to see the Sun nearly every day and feel the warmth of it all day. After growing up in Rainy England, I could see the advantages for my Boys, and as it turned out I was right and they all have done excellent, have all been there own Bosses !!!!! Plus there Health in much better, no more colds and flu. Eddie
