Maternity Hospital Recommendation

I was very happy with the Whittington. They were the closest hospital for me to get to, which was very important to me, more important than going to the swish UCLH.

The midwives were great, offering community based appointments (ie, somewhere closer to home than the hospital).

And when it came to birthing, they were great. I opted for the birthing centre, which was lovely, but due to complications I had to be rushed up to the mat ward, but they were really efficient, and quickly helped a safe delivery. The ward afterwards was noisy, but that’s to be expected. I had hoped to stay in the birthing centre as they have private rooms, but it wasn’t to be!

I've worked in a lot of London hospitals, including all the ones mentioned, and what it comes down to is the mws that you have on the day.  Postnatal wards aren't great in any of them really.  Most now allow the partner to stay over.

It's not obligatory.  But I agree, everyone gets more rest when everyone is home.

Had my first baby at Whittington in August :D and would definitely recommend it. We were in the birth centre which is lovely, you can check out pictures/ video on the hospital's website to get a better idea.
Straight after delivery I had to be rushed up to the labour ward so I experienced both parts. All the staff were really caring and attentive. Planning to have any future babies there too.

We were at UCLH for our first baby July 2015 and they looked after us really well. It wasn't too far, we just got a cab and it was fine. I have plenty of friends who were at the Whittington and found the care there really good as well. Congratulations and good luck!

Whittington was amazing for me in June, could not have got a better team in birth centre and in my transfer to labour ward, I was lucky to be transferred to recover in the birth centre again. Heard mixed reports from those who had to stay in labour ward to recover. Generally think depends who you get. My midwives were absolutely brilliant and made birth of my daughter as smooth as possible despite the transfer....

Due to a stubborn baby my wife and I spent a few days in the Whittington. Mostly cannot fault our experience. The birthing centre is a calm less medicated environment if that is your preference. The midwives were excellent as was the care provided. We also experienced the labour ward which had brilliant midwives and doctors. And when a code red was declared help poured in from everywhere and my son and wife were well looked after.

The negative was arriving on Cellier Ward on a weekend. This is where some of the care and attention was lacking in our experience.

Good luck. I recommend all the courses the hospital offers. And take the opportunity to visit the ward and birthing centre.
