Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Every year as winter approaches just about all people of pensionable age are offered a flu jab. This is also offered to  people with relevant health issues; history of pneumonia etc. This year however, there is an unacknowledged problem. Many people are experiencing quite significant illness following the jab. I have had flu symptoms for a week now, following the jab and while not as bad as full blown flu, its no joke. Considering the jab is only 60% effective, the question arises, as to whether it is worth it. I contacted my GP surgery to report this and got a stock answer 'the vaccine does not contain any live virus and will not lead to illness' However someone at the surgery told me that they agreed with me but were under instructions to give out the 'approved' response. Given the widespread fears over the MMR vaccines just a few years ago, which showed that many people mistrusted 'official' statements and avoided the MMR, including Tony Blair, who refused to say that his child had been given it, surely we need to be told the truth and given reliable advice. If anyone has any ideas as to how to raise this 'officially' I would be glad to know.

It's called the 'Yellow Card' scheme.  https://yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk/

These are the strains of flu virus that you got, but they aren't live viruses:

  • A/H1N1 – the strain of flu that caused the swine flu pandemic in 2009
  • A/H3N2 – a strain of flu that mainly affects the elderly and people with risk factors like a long term health condition. In 2016/17 the vaccine will contain an A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 H3N2-like virus
  • Influenza B - a strain of flu that particularly affects children. In 2016/17 the vaccine will contain B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus

My point is that there is a widespread experience of illness following the jab; you are just repeating the official line. Every year the jab is altered to suit the prevailing strains. This year it is making many people ill. Ask around and you will find out.

Sorry?  "If anyone has any ideas as to how to raise this 'officially' I would be glad to know." You asked for how you report concerns with or reactions to vaccinations - I have given you that information.  You report it to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme.  Why is it that everyone on this forum responds with abuse, even when someone answers their question?

I also thought you might like to know which strains you had - perhaps you could google them and see whether anything else was being reported more widespread than Haringey.  If you are hearing this from local people, it's quite likely that a virus is going round.

Apologies for not taking the time to consider your post properly.

I am trying to impress on you that there is not 'a virus going round' People are getting ill immediately following their jab.

Anecdotally speaking.

Well speaking as someone who formerly worked at the Health Protection Agency (now part of Public Health England) whose laboratories develop these vaccines, they report widespread false reporting of flu symptoms following jabs.  It's mostly psychosomatic or just a coincidence.  These things are already tested and monitored more than you can possibly imagine.

I can assure you its not psychosomatic. Please don't sneer at people who are ill for a reason that is inconvenient.

I wasn't sneering just reporting what actual studies have found.

How do you know it's not psychosomatic? The symptoms are the same. If you think you have an infection, then go for a test. That will either confirm your suspicion or put your mind at rest.

So report it via the MHRA then and get everyone you have heard from to do the same.  Otherwise nothing will be done about it.

You are a bloody scaremongeri. Provide real stats for how widespread this is and I will not Dismiss your post out of hand. You also quoted the MMR debacle where the lay media quoted the research of a proven liar who was struck off. His paper was responsible for the dangerously low uptake of theMMR vaccine. And from my experience, my 80 yr old father has not become ill from this years flu jab,.

People still avoid the MMR, there was an outbreak in Haringey earlier this year and some parents were advised to have the booster within a couple of months, rather than waiting for the usual 2.5 years.
