Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!
Wedding!
I got engaged, yay! Now it's time to start planning...I'd love to have some local contributions and ideas as I'm sure many of you are either married yourselves or been to a fair few good weddings!
Can anyone recommend any of the following?
- photographer
- band
- make up artist
- hairdresser
- florist
- wine seller
- Registrar
- dress designer
- stationery for invitations
I look forward eagerly to your suggestions and anything you think I might have missed off the list!

I would thoeoughly recommend Elisana for flowers. The shop is at Turnpike Lane station, beautifully done and Ari, the owner, worked with us to suit our budget also.

Hi there, we used http://www.babbphoto.com/ for our wedding a few years ago, she was really creative and lovely styling on the photos.
We got our invitations printed by Harrington and Squires in Tufnell Park (where we lived at the time) and did the insert stuff ourselves. http://harringtonandsquires.co.uk/
We got married at Islington Town Hall (you can't choose your Registrar, you just get assigned one and it's all a bit impersonal but that's how it works).
Got my dress from Fur Coat No Knickers in town (not sure they're in the same place any more) - they do vintage dresses that they convert for you based on what you want.
We had our reception in a pub so had their wine, but my sister got hers from Majestic, who also do free glass hire.
I would recommend getting your wedding and reception booked before doing anything else as you'd be surprised at the waiting lists for weddings, especially if you want to get married on a Saturday at a reasonable time of day (i.e. not 10am).

My wife bought from Fur Coat No Knickers when they were on Carnaby Street. But they were forced out in favour of food establishments, and are now south of the river.

And secondly I think the Council Chamber at Islington Town Hall is a really special room - there's a virtual tour you can take on Islington's website. I agree with Charlotte that the other rooms are a bit drab but the main room is lovely. Bear in mind that if you stay single then there are all sorts of things you're not automatically entitled to that married people get. Most of these things only come up when you die, so are only a problem for the people you leave behind.

There's no transfer of the unused portion of the Inheritance Tax threshold though, unless you're married/in a civil partnership. Of course, if you're super wealthy you'll probably have a trust set up in your will, but that isn't something everyone can do. Also, you'll be down on the death certificate as 'reported the death' rather than any familial relationship, there's no option for 'partner'. If there are any life assurance or dependent's pensions payable, you'll have to provide proof of your relationship, whereas payment would be straightforward if there were a marriage (or equivalent) certificate.

And if you're tempted to use Haringey's Civic Centre, Zena and I found the staff there lovely. Very efficient but warm and welcoming too. (Hopefully they're still there and have not been replaced with interims or consultants.)
I hope also they listened to Zena's suggestion to make some limited temporary carparking available. Also that they continue to keep the building free of graffiti and ensure litter is removed from the rear. And have placed some stepping stones across the little garden where people like photos taken.
