I'm thinking of upgrading. My lovely Nikon film SLR has served well, but I do need instant confirmation that the shot is ok for exposure etc without going to Boots.l
In a digital SLR can you view and compose the shot in the electronic viewfinder or is it only to review after the shot is taken ?
John, the way things are moving you might want to weigh up the choice for you between mirrorless vs DSLR.
With a DSLR you compose in the VF and review on a back screen. Using a mirrorless camera, you can't look directly through the lens so you have an electronic viewfinder (EVF). With this you can both compose and review.
The best mirrorless cameras are now almost as good as professional DSLRs - check out comparative reviews of, for example, Canon 5D vs Nikon 810 (both DSLRs) vs the mirrorless Sony A7R II.
Google the choice between DSLR and mirrorless and you'll be flooded with things to read and watch. This YT video offers a simple coverage in just under 8 minutes.
I still mainly shoot DSLR and have just invested in a new model, but I bought a mirrorless Fuji XT1 last year as a simple carry-round and by way of putting a toe into the mirrorless water.
Thanks Hugh
I was thinking of a DSLR because apparently they have a larger sensor whereas the Bridge models seem to have the same size sensor as my compact.
Same range of sensor sizes as on a DSLR, John. What's your goal with maximising your sensor size?
I have both a full frame DSLR and one with a 1.5x crop factor. When I shoot with a fish-eye I get a 50% bigger usable image with the crop sensor than I do out of a full frame.
Also check out the difference a sensor size makes wth the image you get using the same lenses. It was quite a shock to me when I attached my zoom to a full frame for the first time. Suddenly I could 'zoom much less'. Read around, you'll see what I mean. (But I guess if you're coming from a film body, there'll be no surprises there for you! The surprise will be seeing it on a crop sensor.)
What's your budget? Here are a few mirroless options. including a Fuji at under £300.
If I were starting from scratch, even setting up a pro kit, I'd probably go mirrorless. For non-pro, the argument to go mirrorless is even stronger.
Hmm.
I think £1000 for XT1 body only is a bit rich for my budget
Interesting video. I think I'm going for DSLR. After all, I've been using the optical viewfinder for years on the Nikon
Nothing wrong at all with a DSLR if that's what you're comfortable with. Are you buying new or second hand? If you don't have to have the very latest, you can get some stellar deals on a second-hand Nikon. This second-hand D300s, for example, although crop is an excellent camera and just £300. (Here's a comparison of a Nikon full frame vs crop)
Just when I had made up my mind
Thanks for all this Hugh. I think the second-hand D300 is just a bit too secondish.
The other argument in favour of optical viewfinder is I often find the screen is washed out with ambient light.
It's my birthday next week. Maybe someone will make my mind up for me
'Secondish'? What do you mean? Do you mean out of date?
'Washout' can be an issue with the LCD on the back of a camera, but with an EVF, you're looking through the viewfinder as you would with an optical. So, all ambient light is blocked and you won't find washout an issue in the slightest.
Oh right, sure. If 2nd hand makes sense to you (as it does to me), there are plenty of items around to be had. That was just one I grabbed at quickly by way of example.
I took the plunge with an entry-level Canon 1300D. Now waiting for the battery to charge ( fingers tap tap )
Thanks for all the advice.
Enjoy! I expect to see plenty of stellar pics being added by you now, Mr D.
