Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Walking up from Green Lanes, flashing lights and police on Pemberton Road. The police officer said it was a stabbing and they were looking for a knife.

He also had a very resigned look and said it was happening every day all over London but the powers that be don't seem to care.

you think that there's something unique about people who live in harringay that only they amongst all london are "accepting low level crime and anti social behaviour as normal."?

We haven't made it on to to "ILiveHere" yet, so it can't be that bad.

Sunday, 9:30am in the passage near the school in Pemberton Road there were 3 people who looked like were sharing drugs. One was one of the local homeless (or drug addict) people. The others were facing away so I could not see. I am sure crime in Harringay is not dissimilar from other areas in London but it certainly feels a bit rougher lately.

It is without question 'rougher' lately. It is why the police are having this meeting because a hell of a lot has been going on and they want to reassure us they are tackling the issues. Such meetings are fairly rare.

Various operations are under way with resources being put in. But the public do need to come along to (a) show the police & council the public are concerned and (b) scrutinize what they are doing and for how long.

This sort of level of crime and amount of crime has happened before, about 15 - 10 years ago when there were stabbings in Ducketts Common, murder in the passage etc. The Virgin helicopter was a regular feature of the area.

To try and reduce crime levels and improve things again a huge effort from all agencies is needed plus funding. This will only happen if people who live & work in our area start coming to meetings such as the one on Friday and start putting pressure on our councillors.

Issues like the sexual harassment Kat alluded to don't appear in crime statistics though do they. I've lived in many areas of London but that is an aspect I haven't seen so widely in other areas.
Sorry, can someone tell me again where the police are meeting and the exact time? I'd like to attend if I can escape from work on time. I do think it's important to be there and I would quite like to mention about the drug activity I witnessed near the school the other day.
Thanks!

Jayvee, as one of the multitude who "have lived here a long time and are numb to it," I'm curious to know by what criteria you (de)grade Harringay as "rough as f*ck".  I guess we need to be told something of your experience of "f*ck" before we can agree or disagree with you.

I lived in Loughbrough Junction in the 1990s too (admittedly not on the Angell Town estate), and other parts of London.  There is no comparison to Harringay imo.

Yes, parts of Harringay/Haringey are rough. As are many areas of London and other towns and cities in the UK.

I do think this end of Green Lanes is a bit rough and I don't particularly feel comfortable walking down apart from during the day time when it can seem quite okay!

It's such a funny mix - I use Music and Beans, Bun and Bar, Bruhaha and the Salisbury which I think are really nice. But then you throw the strange characters, leery men and grittiness into it and I don't like Green Lanes at all.

Of course some other areas of London feel and look much rougher. I feel VERY uncomfortable around Finsbury Park station and that area but I have a friend who lives on a nice street 10 minutes walk away and she has two coffee shops there and she likes it but doesn't feel safe walking from Finny P either and would rather walk from Arsenal.

I'm sure I will be blasted for liking coffee shops and gourmet burgers. But at least I'm not using big corporate chains right and supporting the local economy?

It certainly does come down to perception Kat. I've lived around the Stroud Green/Hornsey area since 1985 and haven't really experienced much by way of crime. I have to say though that these days I do get uneasy passing the informal herbal and pharmaceutical entrepreneurs who gather at Turnpike Tube of an evening.

Someone mentioned Crouch End in the thread - a couple of months ago Muddy Boots in Crouch End  were using a locked door to vet customers. They told me they had just experienced several robberies,  one of which included the shop assistant being dragged unto the street while attached to some steak. And then...
