It was well attended, possibly because it's the first general public meeting Lammy has had in Harringay ward since becoming our MP 9 years ago (that I'm aware of).
I learnt the following;
1. Lammy was at the inauguration of Obama
2. Lammy wouldn't commit to sending his children to his nearest local school, located in the very road he resides in.
3. Lammy was happy to publicly lambast the local Labour councillor over the issue of HMOs and has started to take certain cases to the ombudsman rather than deal with this Labour Council
4. HOL was praised by Lammy as an important local forum, after Hugh & Liz met with Lammy last week.
5. Lammy emphasized that he has little power as our MP to represent us decisively on the issues of traffic & gambling and can only 'lobby' the council and/or fellow MPs.
6. There's a general election in the not too distant future.
Hello,
Wasnt able to make the meeting but great updates on what went on.
To add:
1. read that Lamay and Obama were at Harvard at the same time and met there
5. Who then does represent us on issues of traffic particularly?
I've lodged complaints about speed of traffic on Woodlands Park Road (meant to be 20mph, has ineffectual speed bumps, commonly cars overtake each other they are that ineffectual and there are schools at either end of the road)
Have complained to council to no avail, about to complain to police.
Did write to DL's office, got a nice letter back but said it would 'take some time' to get an response back.
Does anyone have any suggestion of whom to take this matter to?

Yes, the cabinet member responsible is Councillor Brian Haley. You might copy David Lammy on any communication with Haley, (especially if you're complaining about a lack of response till now), because Councillor Halely's continued failure to communicate with residents was raised at the meeting. It might also be worth your while copy the new leader Clare Kober and of course your own ward councillors.
All contacts for your representatives can be found via Local Info tab then Govt Stuff link. Clare Kober's, you'll be able to assume from the other councillors' email addresses.
I thought Mr Lammy conducted himself well considering the powers he has at local level - very little. Good turnout as well.
He commended the LCSP and HOL as great community initiatives and especially HOL as this is un-chartered waters. Harringay should be proud.
Although he supported the Gambling Act and voted in favour in 2005, he said in retrospect he wouldn't have voted that way knowing what he does now. He has supported all the local opposition to gambling within Harringay.
He has reported Haringey Council to the local authority ombudsman, as they are not dealing with the HMO situation, as they should be.
Local councilors refused any criticism regarding the implementation of the planning enforcement.
He refused to answer why he didn’t send his kids to the school on his street and if I was in his shoes I wouldn’t of answered too but you cannot comment on how a local community is doing if you are unprepared to support it – at every level. He is not on his own here, remember Diane Abbot?

As meetings go, yes it did go well. And a certain member of the audience was dealt with effectively in the end by other members of the audience .... using democratic means of course.
I thought it went pretty well, despite one person (Mario) trying to take control of it right at the start, and then behaving really annoyingly throughout. A few people sitting near him left. But as MAtt says, democracy prevailed!
I thought David Lammy dealt with it pretty well - and was able to talk convincingly about the things that were on the agenda. I didn't feel I learn that much new, though it did really bring home to me how woefully inadequate Haringey's planning section is in terms of staffing (biggest applause of night was DL's observation that the parking service never seems to suffer from the same problems in terms of staffing - an easy point to make, but a good one none the less).
I thought one of the best contributions of the night was from Wightman Paul, who put forward a very measured and calm set of points about the situation as regards traffic in his road. It was a very good antidote to Mario!!
Personally I'd have liked to have know where his kids will go to school. Sounds like mine are the same age. Would like to have thought that they would both end up at the same sort of place, but sounds like that ain't going to happen!!
I was pleased to have the opportunity to raise some of the points which WRN4 members have expressed as concerns - in particular Eddie [OAE]. It's interesting to see the the various elements which contribute to meaningful participatory democracy, working together - including Mario - to raise the lobbying pressure. Despite DL's modesty, there can be no doubt that the influence and resources which accompany the title MP would add significantly to the community pressure on our elected representatives and the council's salaried officers who are sustained by our council tax payments. I think we all realise the difficulties implicit in dealing with the issues which were on the meeting's agenda. But these are the very issues which politicians are elected to take action on and which officers are paid to deal with. Many of us would like to see the Cabinet members be as prepared to expose themselves to open discussion as did DL and be as prepared to put their hands up and acknowledge the short comings in service provision as a first step to improvement. David had the humility to admit he missed the constituency implications of the Gambling legislation. I have not heard any statement of comparable frankness from the Member with oversight of environment in relation to planning decisions which have a negative impact on quality of life for residents as a result of, for example, traffic displacement. How refreshing it would be if the claims made in the Community Involvement and Consultation agenda for which Lorna Reith was responsible, were to be shown to be something more than ticked boxes. Come on Haringey, step up and take the opportunity to use the energy, committment and intelligence which has been focussed by the work of LCSP and Harringayonline, amongst others, and which DL's office has had the foresight to accomodate. This is a chance for you to make some progress on real local issues for Harringay people.
Mario was hilarious i'm glad he was there. (this gentleman decided strait away that he was going to take over the proceedings and insisted on shouting and interupting at every turn)
eventually - whenever he tried to speak the whole room turned on him 'shut up sit down' ha ha.
in the end he sat down and later, after he had behaved hisself by keeping quiet,
he was finally allowed to speak. after he finished the room erupted in the most applause
of the evening. not for what he said but for the fact that he had been neutralised and was
behaving hisself. everybody that wanted to speak did so. most people came away satisfied.
lammy charmed everyone. julie chaired the meeting very sensitively gave everyone a fair crack.
i went to the salisbury afterwards and sat there alone like a wall flower waiting for anyone else
to come. after a while i finished my lonely drink and turning up my collar, faced the blizzards cold
wind and plodded home to watch 'police on camera' on channel 107.
