Who is responsible for back lanes?
In this mousiest of seasons on the Gardens, I have been blaming our current infestation on the disgusting state of the alleyways behind Grand Parade, which are in a miserable state, partly due to being used as a public urinal by many members of our community - and a good place for doing noisy drug deals on mobile phones by others. Thanks, guys.
Tarmacking these alleys, or at least clearing them of their surfeit of surface crud, could yet save us a bit of heartbreak come cockroaching season, but who do they belong to? Are they the councils' or are they privately owned?

For your information the ally way behind Grand Parade is privately owned however, we can try and tackle the points you have raised."

Mmm.......if you forward me the email exchange to hugh@harringayonline.com, I will try and make sure that it's brought up in the Green Lanes Strategy Group Meeting this week. In attendance will be Counvil, shopkeepers and traders.

I can tell you categorically - they are all private and the responsibility of leaseholers, freeholders, tennants etc. The council will only clear them when it's feeling nice about the world and it isn't at the moment.

Surely there's reasons to be concerned if these locations are used for criminal activity? The police should be involved - the council obviously do not care or are powerless to make private slumlords sort their land out. Disgraceful!

I agree, but every landlord has to be traced and contacted and that is quite a job. Then court proceedings have to be initiated. It can take months nad there are dozens and dozens of these alleyways across the borough and only so many enforcement officers.

I am aware of other areas around the country where Local Authorites have used a "Flashcam" to tackle suitable areas where anti social behviour takes place. I'm sure that Glynn will be familiar with these. The flashcam can be deployed where there is regular nuisance activity such as urination, prostitution or drug taking. The unit takes the offenders photo with a pronounced flash and can issue an audible warning that the photo can be used to prosecute. I daresay there's one sitting in a Haringey Council store somewhere.
