Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Large scale police operation - Allison Road, Sunday 4 Sept

Did anyone else see the large scale police operation on Allison Road yesterday?

I arrived back on Allison Road by car at about 2:30pm and the bottom of the road (by Green Lanes) was blocked by a police car. I asked if I could go up there and the police said as long as wasn’t planning on going beyond the police van blocking the road I could... so they moved.

The van was about 3/4 of the way up the road (half way between the passage and Wightman). When I looked more closely I saw it was actually 2 police vans and 2 police cars. Police in riot gear were surrounding a house. Over the next 10 minutes three more police vans arrived, as well as an ummarked police car. Someone not in uniform got out the unmarked car... the boss I’m guessing.

I didn’t want to get too close, but did anyone who lives closer find out what was going on? Drugs or in connection to the shooting last week is my guess, but it’s nothing more than a guess.

I did take a photo but it's rubbish and doesn't show anything, plus a few other residents of Allison Road are milling about on the road, and so I won't post a picture of them without their permission!

I believe it was a lady they were chasing who was threatening to jump off a roof onto a glass conservatory, she was also holding glass and threatening to stab herself with it if the police got too close, she was asking for a human rights activist or something like that too, they managed to get her down and took her away in the end.

I'm not too sure why she was doing it though.

Smashing glass ceilings is now old hat. The lady was obviously trying it in reverse, hence the need for her own human rights activist.

Wow, that's sad. That was a lot of police for such an incident.

Yes very, a lot of them did leave after a bit, and I thought the riot gear was also pretty unnecessary.

"I thought the riot gear was also pretty unnecessary" - perhaps it was used as protection.  I would want good protection if I had to face someone who was threatening to jump onto a glass roof and holding a piece of glass.

Yeah but with 3 vans full of police in riot gear for one lady, I thought it was a bit much.

Well quite... The response to the actions of The Earl of Seven Sisters was positively encouraging in comparison: http://www.harringayonline.com/forum/topics/the-earl-of-seven-sisters
Would they have been required for a human wall to restrict access to the individual on Alison Road, (protecting any potential further threat to residents or officers, by containment.)

Riot gear seems hostile, but sounds like they weren't deployed, the police may have suspected that this could have involved more individuals.

We're often told we are just reacting to a fear of crime, or false sense of crime, maybe the police need to read the community better, before situations escalate. Do police receive appropriate training in Haringey on how to deesculate a situation.

I hope the poor woman gets the support she now needs, this is the second such incident, the last was a fire allegedly set in desperation, above Snug, Green Lanes Harringay.

We need to accept we all have a mental health, and we need to invest in understanding and support through our NHS, and other front line services.

Having support cut can cause distress beyond an individual's control. Protocol is needed to deal with vulnerability, those vulnerable are most exposed. ACCESSABILITY to appropriate holistic care, is in dire need of investment.

I don't know the reasons for the individuals distress, but it struck a chord with me on how individuals can become vulnerable to desperate actions, without receiving appropriate counciing or support.
I'm glad she was not hurt, her actions sound like a last resort.
