cyclists, watch out for a mammoth pothole on Green Lanes
There is a crater like pothole outside 409 Green Lanes (very close to Burgoyne Rd) in the northbound lane. It is outside the estate agents Anthony Pepe (which has not opened yet). The pothole is about 1. 5 metres from the curb, so exactly where you would be riding if the cars are not parked in the evening rush hour (4-7pm). It is about 4 inches deep.
I have reported it to Haringey - lets see if they fulfill their promise to repair dangerous potholes within 24 hours.

Out of interest, Adam, how did you report it? By email, or the Report a Problem page on the Council's website? Or by phoning the Council's switchboard; or via the Potholes Hotline - 020 8489 3993?
It has long struck me that the very first step to tackle potholes should have been to tap into the experience of our local experts. Those residents who, hour-by-hour and day-by-day, continually spot the location of almost every pothole in Haringey: cyclists. Those with mobile phone cameras should be able - if they wish - to send in a photo.
If you actually spoke to someone, did you get the impression they were making an assessment of the seriousness of the problem - in order to prioritise the work needed? (And maybe send someone down to put warning signs round a really big hole? )

On a serious note, I try to use fixmystreet to report potholes. I don't tend to attach photos, as I really don't want to stop and get off the bike.

i gave up using the council phone numbers and Enterprise/Accord to reoprt rubbish, potholes etc over a year ago - i was fed up of having to wait ages to get through and then having to write down the reference number. if you record issues online, you get an email sen to you with the reference number

A Manchester friend claimed his city used the unit DDB to estimate the size of very large holes in the street. Meaning the size of so many Double Decker Buses.

I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and the potholes there were a talking point in general conversation just like the weather is here. I do not begrudge them their 4WDs in that city, they need them.

Well, it's still there (original post by Adam from Sunday) + a large impacted drain cover right in the middle of Green Lanes northbound side between Mattison Rd and Chesterfield Gardens. And as for the same side of Green Lanes as it runs alongside Ducketts Common just before the Turnpike Lane junction..... It's safer just to get off and walk that bit, what with the buses as well. What actually is the best way to report these to the Council?

i reported it via the the council website and www.filthathole.org.uk
although fillthathole sends an email directly to the council email address (so they are getting the same email twice) - by using this website, there is a public record for everyone to see that it has been recorded

The dedicated Potholes Hotline was Cllr Haley's personal initiative. It was a response to a consultation in June 2007, called: On the Road to Improvement. This was said to have shown that residents gave repairing potholes as their biggest highways priority. (Perhaps because they were asked to tick a limited number of boxes.)
I'm not sure if the idea came from John Major's Cones Hotline. Perhaps not, as this is also remembered for the term cone syndrome - meaning a prominent and expensive Government initiative without any real purpose.
Haringey's Pothole Hotline scheme does promise to reduce the time for repairing potholes from 28 days to 7 days; and 24 hours if the pothole is considered dangerous. All reports are supposed to be checked by a visit the next working day.
This is why I asked if there was anyone at the end of a phone asking about the pothole and how dangerous it is. That's one thing an expensive dedicated phone line should at least be able to do. (Not quite so simple when reporting is via an external website which duplicates the report via the Council’s website.)
Bear in mind that snow and ice lead to cracks and potholes - as water freezes within the road surface. London’s pothole repair contractors will be very busy right now.
