That's very interesting, Paul. It's the exact period that's seen such an increase in traffic on the Ladder. I'd be fascinated to hear what the experts say about this trend. I assume it's common across all boroughs?

Following your first point Hugh, a little digging on available data for AADF [annual average daily flow] for Haringey's minor roads from:

https://data.gov.uk/dataset/gb-road-traffic-counts

yields some interesting information [after you sort out Haringey from the rest of the country].  Of minor roads identifiable in the data [by their B road number], only Durnsford Road in Bounds Green and Spaniards Lane in Hampstead carry comparable flows to Wightman Road [B138].

Hi Paul, I cycle on Wightman Road as pert of my route t KX every day so was interested in your thread.   Looking at Google maps Durnsford Road is the  A218. So is it not in the last excel spreadsheet you kindly posted? Back to Wightman - It is narrow and so a little nerve racking at the crossing points - also the three climbs don't win particular favour with me on a cold grey monday morning! Any incentive not to get to the office.. The best,  and I think only way to avoid the traffic is be early - if I hit it at 6.45 - its pretty empty. Our tube system is over stretched and expensive, ditto for rail and yet so many more thousands of people could cycle to work if they felt safer - chicken and egg! I think lots of tiny measures are needed to encourage more people out of their cars onto their bikes. I feel lucky that my employer has 1st class secure storage as well as shower and changing facilities.  We can't wait for cross rail 2 ! I have a pretty quiet route and its direct - but Wightman Road is the horrible part of the journey - when its busy perversely it can be the most uplifting as right it the top on a clear crisp morning the sun rise to your left as you pass the "ladder runs" is amazing - so beautiful

I completely agree with your description of the cycling experience on Wightman Road. I am not sure we are both looking at the same Durnsford Road (B106) from Alexandra Park to Bounds Green?

Haringey's main roads are being used less for a couple of reasons. One is that minor roads been opened up to flow that they could not previously take via one way systems. The other is that once people have a choice, they will avoid traffic lights even to have a journey of the same amount of time. The ladder is a classic example.

PS the Road Surface on the return journey is terrible - dangerous on a bike - around Seymour Road. Its not so noticeable to the way there as 1) you are going much slower up hill and 2) its a bit better surface on the eastern side of the road.

The evidence of existing schemes, the time-frame over which they were implemented and the attempts to finesse more of the same - proposal to pedestrianise Wood Green High Road from the same time frame for example, after the creation of the Heartlands road -all support your perception that our predicament is, in large part, the result of political decisions taken with conscious intent. It is to the credit of the current Cabinet Member for Environment that views such as yours are now being listened to rather than arrogantly dismissed or simply ignored.
I find it interesting that the 'nudge' effect of the narrowing of Wood Green High Road has made it far less busy traffic wise. I now avoid it less!
