Sainsbury's won't bring Conran back to consult, as he supplies John Lewis, but Matthew Hilton may be a good bench mark, Ozzy, Leonhard Pheifer has worked with Heal's, Habitat France and John Lewis, and he's based in Old Street, so if their serious they will need a creative helms-person to make it a success.
Poly Dickens, (you've probably read her Granfathers work,) could continue as Creative Director of Habitat, Sophie Conran could fashion a gentle contemporary established feel Sainbury's might look for, continuing the family connection, who knows, it's not yet in the bag.
I've predicted the Peugeot design award winner a few times, el Ultimato Gritto, (anyone who ate at Cafe lemon will remember the red aluminium lamps adopted by Mathmos,) Claire O'hea & Inflate, so having spent 5 minutes looking may not be the same as walking around 100% Design, (when you can gain a sense of a persons work,) but worth a stab.

Sainsbury's hasn't yet bought Argos due to a last minute challenge from Steinhoff International. If they do they're planning to close a number of current Argos stores as a fair number of leases expire over the next 5 years or so, then bring Argos concessions into their stores. Business analysts were surprised at the move and unsure whether it will work.
As Matt says an Australian company has bought Homebase. A lot of bricks & motar retail operations are in a state of flux (as we keep hearing) with the latest predictions seeing 900,000 (from current 3 million) going over the next 10 years, largely down to internet shopping.

I did hear that DIY (destroy it yourself) is going out of fashion, people are opting for the abundance of cheap labour and cheaper material outlets instead. Even mega-stores are running into trouble having to compete with Aldi/Lidl etc, that is probably why metro style shops are springing up like mushrooms.

Yes, interesting watching that pseudo history programme where a family lives different decades, with the 90s seeing a mad rush into DIY & now, as you say, people are asking for a tradesman to fix a shelf to a wall! No doubt the influx of eastern european trades people has helped that along and a few DIY disasters :)
Btw, other post should read 900,000 'jobs'.
