Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

IF YOU are viewing this web page using Internet Explorer running (perforce) on Microsoft's "Windows" operating system, you might want to know about this security warning.

If you want to stay with "Windows" but switch – even temporarily – to a more secure browser, consider Firefox, or Safari.

Better still, if you want to switch to a more secure operating system, consider going UNIX-class, either Mac or Linux.

Whilst I'm all for being informed about these issues (and using Firefox or Chrome browsers) we should put this in perspective.

The issue affects Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). You can tell if you have this by going to the Help menu and selecting "About Internet Explorer", It will show a version number.

As with most of these issues, the web pages that are likely to be infected (and hence expose you to risk) are the less reputable web sites - those hosting "Adult Entertainment" or illegal software downloads.

The register (a tech news site) has a small write up here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/15/ie7_exploits/

And Microsoft have a piece here: http://tinyurl.com/6msm6r
I've just seen that Microsoft will be issuing a fix for this issue today at 1pm EST (6pm GMT), so presumably this will be available via WindowsUpdate this evening.

For those interested in the techy details the almost undecipherable Microsoft Security Bulletin can be found here: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms08-dec.mspx
