Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Has anyone ever petitioned for speed cameras on Wightman Road? Only a couple of months ago outside our house we woke up to the pavement ripped up and four posts knocked down.

Today a car crashed into our parked car on Wightman Road. Their car flipped and caught fire and ours is a write off. Luckily no one was injured as i dread to think what might have happened if anybody had been on the pavement or us getting in or out of our car.

Just wondered if this has been brought up before as i've seen many a car driving too fast down this long road.

Hi Sarah,

So sorry to hear about your car. Glad to hear that no-one was hurt. I'm part of the Wightman Road Residents Association. We campaigned for the 20mph speed limit and humps to slow down traffic. Agree that this isn't doing enough to deter people speeding and HGVs and it's very difficult for pedestrians to cross safely. It can only be a matter of time when there is a serious accident/fatality. I'd be interested to hear from the council/local councillors what they are doing - if anything - to address this issue. I'm even doubtful how successful speed cameras would be in slowing traffic down. Maybe it's time to consider a more drastic solution and actively deter those who are just using Wightman Road as a rat-run and for the street to return to what it is - a residential street - for the benefit of those who live there and in the surrounding streets.

I'm so sorry to hear about your car. I live on Wightman Road and would definitely be in favour of speed cameras/other traffic calming measures. With the speeds some of the vehicles are travelling, I feel like it's only a matter of time before there's a serious accident. Cameras on the pedestrian crossings would also be helpful as pretty much every time I cross by Harringay rail the first couple of cars go through the red light. A couple of months ago my partner was hit on the foot by a car on the pedestrian crossing by Hornsey gate on Endymion Road and the car didn't even stop (he was fine).

Hi

I had my car written off outside my house on Wightman Rd a few years back as did my father the same year.  I have lost count of the amount or times wing mirrors had been knocked off or bumpers hit as the cars coming round the bend too quickly and lose control.I have lived here all my life and have been complaining about this since the 80s.   Absolutley nothing came of my ranting and raving.  All my complaints to the relevant departments at Haringey Council over the years have had similar response.  As said before if i remember i was informed they based their decisions on the amount of fatalities in that stretch of road.

I gave up complaining as unfortuantely i had no back up from people around here.

I totally agree and have been meaning to try and do something about this for a really long time...it makes me soooo angry that I often stand in the street like a loon yelling at the traffic! It will unfortunately drive me out of the area as my baby grows up, as quite frankly, it terrifies me what could happen. The vans and lorries are the worst as they thunder around the corner on the wrong side of the road making my windows rattle.... I live between Allison and Beresford and have lost count of the number of times I've seen and heard parked cars have their mirrors ripped off, Our car was crashed into a few years back and we've never parked on Wightman since - bit of a nightmare when carrying baby in a car seat plus shopping or work on a regular basis. I would say that the vast majority of drivers along this road have absolutely no respect for it being a residential street and the speed limit. I often have to wait for a good 20 vehicles to pass before I feel it is safe to cross. I am definitely up for supporting a campaign to get something done.

So sorry to hear about this accident.  Was that a similar thing happening when all the bollards were up? Years ago I campaigned with many parents and with the backing of St Mary's Infant school for widening of the pavements and slowing of the traffic around the railway bridge.  It was and still is very scary walking under the bridge particularly with children and traffic come so close that I was actually hit by a wing mirror once.  No luck and we were actually met by some very rude people at our council, people who should be working for us.  Fingers x that the planned traffic study (any news on that anyone?) will be more successful.  There are strong feelings in the local area and people should not have to live with their cars getting smashed up and fear walking on the pavements.  The red lights by Hampden Road are being jumped all the time too. I drove through Haringey the other day in a black cab.  The female driver commented on all the speedbumps and said they dont work really, what they should do is install speed cameras and hit people where it hurts - in their pockets.
