Walking through Finsbury Park earlier, I saw a couple of workmen finishing off a job on the western bank of the New River in the park. Chatting to them, I learned that they'd been building up the bank and boarding in it. Apparently the American Crayfish which have invaded the river have been eating into the underside of the bank and leaving it in danger of collapse. The repair job just completed by Thames Water should last 20 years, I was told.

Jaysus, if the bloody Yanks aren't devouring our ancient Cricket Grounds they're undermining our banks. Time to step up to the er plate and get our native white-claws stuck into these marauding lobsterlings.
Ha ha, Hugh. I was going put in a complaint that your post should be deleted as racist!
cant we eat the crayfish?
As far as I'm aware it's permitted to catch them and they certainly make for good eating! One of the workmen told me that it's against the law to catch one and throw it back. (I haven't checked if this is true).
You need a permit from the Environment Agency and permission from the landowner to catch them, but think they're free to get.
Gordon Ramsey shows us how.
That's very tempting, Junior. Thanks for posting.
There's another on there of him cooking them - they look delicious!
