Hi Nicola

I am no expert in this field but if a builder suggested to me that I should keep a damp problem in a loft at bay by installing some heating I'd suggest they leave by the nearest exit! In my view any damp problem has to be traced to its source and eliminated. Rising damp is notoriously difficult to pinpoint but in a loft it is probably down to water entering externally and needs to be prevented - maybe then some form of temporary heating to dry out. There are a number of good builders recommended on HOL - I'd be inclined to call a few round for a quote and hopefully more than one will identify the same problem. Also as you are renting the property the landlord has ultimate responsibility. Good luck.

Hi Nicola, I had some damp "experts' in recently for a house I was having done up. I could not recommend any of them.

We have an advertsier on HoL at the moment who does only diagnosis of the issues but no work. SInce I haven't used him, I can't recommend him, but we are going to ask him to have a look at an issue in our house. The drawback is you have to pay; the appparent advantage is that you shoud get advice independent of any driver to deliver the work.

Well really depends what it is and where it is coming from...it could be condensation which tends to cause mould growth (which can indeed be solved by heating or ventilation) or in fact penetrating dampness in which case a roofer may be your best bet.  Condensation tends to be more widespread whereas penetrating dampness is focused on the point of entry.  If it is condensation like your builder seems to think then introducing some ventilation grilles to the roof will solve it in the most cost effective manner.  You would only heat it if it is a habitable space. 

The final option is a plumbing leak if you have any pipes up there...I have seen it before but it tends to be if your sink waste uses a pumped system which is quite rare.  If this is the case you will have a little motor typed thing under your sink.
