There was a house on Wightman that had this done a few years back. It's on the Green Lanes side between about a third ana a half way between the station and Hewitt. You shoud be able to see it as you walk along. You could always try knocking on their door.
Hi
Thanks for the tip, Hugh. I'll definitely try to check that house on Wightman that you suggest. Ours seems to be one of the few - certainly on our stretch - that's a viable space.
We're certainly not expecting to spend squillions! Our basement is already a room, with a door, windows and plumbing - the last owners were using it as a guest bedroom. Just needs properly damp-proofing and decorating. We got some advice and we can apparently dig out and extend it a bit without affecting our neighbours or having to undertake major structural work, so this shouldn't hopefully be too involved.
Deepa, we would be very interested in how you get on with this. We are also on Wightman and have a basement which extends under both front and back rooms and the hallway, it is head high though only if you are less than 6 foot! We had it stripped back to the bare walls a few years ago and use one part as a utility room and the front largely for storage though my husband was using it as an office when he worked from home. It has never been fully tanked and damp proofed and although we have electrical stuff working down there no problem it isn't "habitable" space. Are you thinking about about making it accessible from the front garden?
Hi Karen,
That's really interesting to know. Our basement is already accessible from the front garden - it has it's own front door, which should make any work much easier and less messy as regards the rest of our place. It extends under our front room and also slightly under our hallway, but there's apparently scope to extend sideways and back a bit without any major structural issues. We hope to add a bathroom and turn it from a currently rather a dusty storage room - thankfully already with plumbing and electricity - into a spare bedroom with an ensuite bathroom. Totally with you on the height issue! - head height, but not much more. We looked into digging down to get more height, but it's almost certainly not worth it cost-wise. But that hopefully shouldn't be too much of issue for a cosy bedroom! We've got a plan drawn up and are looking to clear it and get some quotes soon. My - possibly far-fetched - aim is to get the work done before Christmas. Will let you know how we get on.
