Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Wife is looking for a cheap runaround and Fiat Punto looks a good buy, a deal cheaper than Smartcar, Micra etc. Never have driven one but anyone got any experience of them?

We have an '03 Punto 3-door and it's a sturdy little car, it actually manages to take a surprising amount of 'stuff' too. As it is so small it's pretty easy to park round here in the small leftover spaces others can't use. Not too expensive to insure either. MPG good.

Trying to overtake on a motorway with a hill/slight incline is a little beyond it but that's not much of an issue round here. Generally it does all the car-type basics pretty well. My Dad is actually considering getting a Punto as a runabout after seeing ours.

Hope that's of some use.

Thanks Tom, that's helpful. They are going for around £500 or less on ebay so they do look good value....

Reminds of being in Sicily in an old Fiat 500. Going up a mountain, the Sicilian driver went from fourth to third to second to reverse. This was followed by a quick u-turn and reversing over the top of the mountain.

You can't beat the Italians for carrying on business as usual.

I had a punto for years, they are great would definitely recommend.  Very roomy, fantastic leg room in the back and front for a small car.  Now have Fiat 500 and much prefer the drive of the punto.

Had a 51 plate bought in 2005 as my second car until I sold it last year due to my own lack of using it. As long as you use it the car it is a good economical little runner for short and long journeys. Not the fastest, but not the slowest either. Second that opinion on going up hills - never liked Telegraph Hill outside Exeter. Boot was a good size for holidays for 2. Seats could be adjusted to make a bigger space when moving belongings between flats. Had a good built in stereo. Left outside in the wind and rain it was prone to rust - but what car isn't. Have to look out for the head gasket which is a common point of failure on the model. Also little things like the lever arm for the windscreen wipers are prone to go - like on a motorway in the rain!!! Sometimes electrics were a bit temperamental - and lights would regularly go.

My wife - an Italian - surprisingly would avoid in favour of a Twingo or similar small non Italian car.

If want to get a good deal on a new car, check out Orange Wheels on the Internet.   I got about 25% off list price.
