Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Yikes, Batten Down Your Hatches; They're Stealing our Broadband

This just in from the local police:

Cable thefts

Some parts of our Borough have experienced cable theft resulting in the loss of broadband or other means of communication.

Please can I ask you to be extra vigilant and suspicious of anyone you see working on cabling or in manholes.  It is believed the perpetrators of these thefts may well have access to cloned or stolen official utility vehicles and uniforms, making them look official. In some cases, the offenders have used proper road works signage in order to appear legitimate and carry out a theft.  A call to the appropriate utility company will verify if they are legitimate and if you have any doubts or if you see anyone working on cabling after 2300hrs please call 101 immediately.

Ye gods!

This has made me smile, not obviously because of the serious nature of the content, but the idiom 'button down your hatches'. I've always used that phrase, but my wife has always insisted it's 'batten down the hatches'.

After much googling I've had to admit defeat - it's all to do with using wooden battens to make the hatches on boats watertight apparently. I tried to claim that I would use buttons to make them watertight but she wouldn't have any of it!!

Back to topic.....

Your wife is quite right. No idea where the 'Button' came from! Thank you.

clamp down on the scrap metal dealers so they have nowhere to sell the stolen cables/metal etc and you would stifle this sort of crime.

I just called 101 about this. 2 guys on Allison Road pulling a large reel of cable out of the ground as if their lives depended on it.

They had an unmarked white transit van and looked quite unofficial (no uniform, high vis jackets).

Let us know what come of this if you can.

I have a police report number I could follow up.

Virgin engineers were on Duckett Road today (I assumed they were because they had a van and badges). Internet has really slowed down, so I'm guessing that more people might be having to share the bandwidth.
