Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

I'm listening to the midday news    the question posed is "What is a good Muslim?"   that is easy for me to answer   we often refer to "a good Christian (good Samaritan) but I had the illustration of the 'good Muslim' in Istanbul about 15 years ago   I had 2 good friends, both American journalists who had been together for over 40 years  first Henry died of cancer then Charlie was found to have prostate cancer    as requested, I found him excellent consultants in London but he wanted to stay in his home in Istanbul and asked a mutual friend Naim to move in    Naim's fiancee, a tall good-looking rich! girl,  gave him an ultimatum    she said "you are already spending too much time with your friends, choose between them and me"    Naim moved in with Charlie and his kind patient friendship made a big difference to his last few months when it couldn't have been easy    a few months after Charlie's death, Naim met an old schoolfriend, they married and now have 2 gorgeous boys    incidentally, one of Charlie's London consultants told him that there is a world famous cancer specialist in Istanbul with whom he trained!

For some reason, Muslims are expected to demonstrate horror and rejection of any acts carried out in the name of Islam, even tho they had nothing to do with it. The same is not demanded of Jews over the horrendous behavior of the state of Israel. Nor should it be, but it demonstrates the extreme bias of Western governments and media.

I find this post and the loaded question (post hebdo) quite bizarre. You have shared a pleasant story about human kindness. A trait shared by all faiths, atheists and all cultures.

Just in case there's any doubt - the Samaritan was not a Christian :-) Perhaps that was the point of the parable.

Nor was the Good Samaritan regarded as a mainstream Jew.

Martin Luther King had his own take on the story. Observing on the drive down from Jerusalem to Jericho that this was a winding mountainous road. And at the time of Jesus not a four or six lane highway, but a risky place where you wouldn't have felt safe getting off your donkey and going to the aid of a man lying on the ground.  We are told he'd been robbed; the Samaritan stranger didn't know that.

it doesn't matter if he was a good Christian, a good Jew or a good Rastafarian   he was a good Man who wanted to help someone in need   listen to the much-missed Sydney Carter singing {he was one of many people who laughed at that description!) "When I needed a neighbour"

Seems to me if I were a British Muslim - good, bad or plain indifferent -  the last pair I'd want to come prodding me would be Cameron and Pickles.

I would think a good Muslim is a good person who happens to be a Muslim. No more need be said.

For once, I agree wholehearted with you John D
