Irritatingly, there doesn't seem to be a linkup between the Friday Ketchup items and the main site. One of the items was a 'golden number' for libraries. I think this is retrograde step though of course it may be saving them money. As I needed to speak to them I called the usual number and had to listen to lots of blather, lasting quite some time. Then I got through to a call centre, which confirmed that library calls are not being taken by those staff now. As I predicted, the call took twice as long as it would have done (with two lots of automated blather in between) in the old system.

Roslyn, sorry to read that the newsletter links aren't working for you. I've checked a few copies of the newsletter and all links I've tried including the Golden Links one seem to be working for me. I'm not sure what the issue is that you're experiencing. In case it's of any use, you can access the newsletter online here.
Sorry Hugh, I think I may have created a misunderstanding. I didn't mean the links in your newsletter didn't work - I meant that, having deleted the newsletter, there didn't seem to be a link from the website to the newsletter items. I will respond on the link you gave above.
The Council also has plans to close the existing Muswell Hill library (highlighted by the MP here, Lynne Featherstone) - a lovely little library for those who don't know it - though there have been some rather impolite contradictions of this on Twitter. The staff told me there are indeed plans but there would be still be a 'library service' in Muswell Hill. For many closing that building would be tantamount to closing the service.
It would be really helpful if Lynne Featherstone and the local LibDems would publish what factual information they've gleaned on this and - if possible - the sources of that information. Exchanges on Twitter may be a useful way to flag this up. But the issues are too serious to be confined to 140 characters.
Also Roslyn you will understand why some people may feel cynical about protests from Lynne Featherstone (Coalition Government Minister). Though of course, I realise people may have similar feelings about my own former bit-part in our Labour Council. (Although in mitigation, I've spoken out against the Tory policies and the two-boroughs-one-Barnet strategy.)
The idea that a Call Centre is always an efficient way to run a service and save money has been critiqued very effectively by John Seddon. I recommend his latest book: The Whitehall Effect.
The Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green can quickly get it for you.
Thanks, or the library could get it, lol....
It was a staff member who confirmed that the Council intends to do this so I would have thought that is fairly good authority.
