Harringay, Haringey - So Good they Spelt it Twice!

Citizen Empowerment non-profit My Society given Harringay's MP a low ranking alongside other MPs when looking at how responsive he is to his constituents.

My Society's WriteToThem service facilitates communication between UK residents and their MPs. In  2013, it sent 96,396 messages to MPs. In a survey asking service users how responsive their MP was, people were asked whether they had recieved had a reply (not just an acknowledgement) from their representative. 58,558 people answered.

David Lammy was ranked 574th out of 653 MPs and his responsiveness was rated as "low".

My society say that people were surveyed initially after 2 weeks, and if they didn't answer, were surveyed again after 3 weeks. "Because of this, and because of the way different people interpret the survey, you should interpret the figures with caution", they warn.

So, is this a fair cop or is Mr Lammy the victim of a flawed data gathering process?

I have emailed David Lammy on several occasions. I have never even received and acknowledgement. I sent him a letter first class post, asking him in very polite terms, what his views were on a number of topics. No acknowledgement. I have phoned only to be informed by a machine that no appointments where available at that time. The only response I have had is when I have signed an online petition when I got a auto response. He has a penchant for turning up at community events to wave and smile. He seems to offer no alternative or even a viewpoint on any issue of the day, merely a fence sitting attitude. He voted for the war in Iraq and against an inquiry into that war. I can't see myself ever voting for him again. I look forward to there being an alternative candidate Green/Left or whatever who is prepared to stand against him. He gets 11% pay increase, no pension cut and the rest of us can go to hell.

I like him! - We have been to his surgery, he sorted out our problem, he was very busy but he listened carefully and did not rush us, I think he is GOOD for Tottenham and he does a good job.

That's good to hear.

Hugh, the balance of our Borough is accounted for by the neighbouring parliamentary constituency to the immediate west. I wonder if you also checked the ranking of the MP for that area?

Councillor—Highgate Ward

Liberal Democrat Party

I hadn't, but on checking I see that Lynne Featherstone ranks 41st and is given the rating of "very high".

Yes, 41st out of 641 MPs. In the top-most seven per cent.

This kind of behaviour is typical and unsurprising. It's the kind of conduct that I and many others have come to expect from that MP.

I should add that whilst I only ever contact David Lammy's office with a HoL hat on, in terms of responsiveness, I have no complaints.

Having had absolutely no luck at all with the Council, or Cllr Diakides (last wrote to him just before the local elections) over several years attempting to get the garden next door cleared of undergrowth, sycamore and unwanted pieces of furniture, I wrote to David explaining the long-standing problem. Besides the automatic reply, I received a fuller reply saying he would be looking into it and report back to me. A few weeks passed and he sent me an email saying the work would be done by the end of July and that I was to contact him again in August if the situation was not resolved satisfactorily.

The work has been done - although the pile of brambles, sycamore branches and other stuff is in one very large pile at the bottom of the garden...

This would not have happened without David's intervention, so he gets a gold star from me!!

If the Council had done something when I first raised this matter - several years ago - I believe a considerable amount of Council money could have been saved. (But what do I know?)

MPs are social workers most of their time. DL has a fat workload, and the highest number of paid staff IIRC. Not defending him, but would you want to be the last resort for Tottenham's 115k residents, including some of the poorest people in the UK?

I am slightly fascinated by how an MP does their job- the juggling of the needs of their individual constituents, with the need to be active in Parliament, get onto relevant committees there, keep an eye on the local council, and also have a life - how do they do it?

I have just received a form email from Lammy, wherein he justifies Israel's attack on Gaza. There is an emergency meeting next Thursday 31st July at Wightman Road mosque at 7.30 to discuss our response to this appalling crime against humanity.

How about the appalling crime against the 3 Israeli boys who were murdered by Hamas ?

Which led to a tit for tat murder by Israelis

Which led to Hamas sending rockets into Israeli civilian areas

OK guys, lets not get into the Middle East crisis here please. Right now both sides have been aired. Can I suggest you go on to one of the newspaper or political sites to discuss this issue.
